This, admittedly very small, cute restaurant is quite obviously a family affair. Although i don't get the opportunity to speak much with the staff, as they are primarily Chinese, they are always very fast and efficient.
The whole of the dining area is about the same size as a home's dining room might be. The reason for this, I suspect, is due to the fact that the location is a converted house. There is a small patio dining area, but the location might make it difficult for some to enjoy their food there.
Speaking of the location, it is directly adjacent to the university, which is especially convenient for students. The large number of Chinese students who eat there on a daily basis speaks to their authenticity in an undeniable way.
The menu is small but quite extensive, with delicious small items, such as their Tea Eggs and many buns, and hearty main courses. The very provincial might unhappy with their options, as there are few of the Americanized Chinese options present on the menu. If you're a little daring, or traveled, you'll find the choices difficult to make as so many things sound good.
I would recommend this venue to people who crave authentic Chinese cuisine, and aren't put off by the limited room and casual dining experience. The food is amazing, and though the staff aren't overly solicitous, i believe they do a wonderful job catering to Americans like myself. Give it a try, anf expect to become addicted to their...
Read moreThe menu here is authentic mix if various chinese food. My son and I ordered the mushroom/spinach bun which came out as a huge large steaming bun that was both soft and delicious.
I had the chicken/shrimp/scallop noodle soup. I was extremely surprised in a pleasant way at just how good the broth tasted. it hit me with a wallop. It was perfectly balanced in terms of seasoning and water to chicken fat ratio. really really good. the noodles are served separately and you add as much or as little at a time as you want.
My son has the spicy beef soup. He loved it. It was Sichuan style with the tongue numbing pepper that he loved.
The soups above were served in gigantic portions!
We also ordered the veggie dumplings. You get 15 for $7.50!! We were too full and took them back to our hotel room. Great snack if your hotel room has a fridge. here too the dough was on the thicker side but done right. Dumpling mostly cabbage but super delicious.
What i didn’t like about this place is that it’s ok to be a divey chinese restaurant, been to plenty back home, but in Tucson you should have ample AC. It was hot inside and not pleasant.
Also they serve their dishes in styrofoam take out containers even when you eat in. Not a great eating experience. I assume this is a 99.9% take out place.
Over all the food was great. If you don’t know about this place, it’s a gem in the rough...
Read moreStill providing delicious food! I regularly get the Braised Beef soup , Tea Eggs and Dumplings. I highly recommend ordering Online and doing the Take Out. The place is still a bit of a dive, which is fine if you go in with that expectation. The seating area needs improvement and they do need upgrades IN restaurant but the food is always consistently good.
Language: There is a bit of a language barrier as mentioned in other reviews. The owner seems to really care about the quality of food and won't hesitate to fix any mix-ups or issues with your order. It appears to be Family Owned and operated. There is a son there I've encountered a few times who does speak english and may play 'translator'. I've been in this role myself with my own family and I get it. However he definitely has an attitude problem. It seems like he really does not want to be there and always seems to be in a bad mood when I visit and it shows in the lack of customer service. That's the only real feedback I have as this may deter first timers.
If you do encounter him, don't let him represent the delicious food they serve there.
Support these small businesses as they are getting the brunt of the economic turmoil due to COVID. They're doing their best! Remember to be kind and don't judge a book...
