These guys know what they're doing, and they're straight-up. I recently realized, after taking an over-the-handlebars digger because of it, that the middle and big chainrings were worn out on my old Stumpjumper, which I use mainly as a commuter. If I applied even medium force to the pedals the chain would skip, and almost always at a bad time. So I ordered and installed new rings and chain (all real SRAM Truvativ parts). To my dismay the bike didn't shift well afterwards, and it "hunted" between gears while just cruising along. Having a couple leaky faucets and a Check Engine light to deal with at home I elected to take it to RC, as they had done an excellent job on a spoke replacement and wheel truing for me a few months back. Man, I'm glad I did. I was met shortly after wheeling my bike in by a mellow friendly dude with glasses and a beard who heard me out and then wrote me up for a general shifting system tune-up. He quoted me $45, which was fine, as being a mechanical guy myself I have a feel for how much effort things like this take to do right. He said they'd have a go at it and call me in the next few days to let me know it was ready. So I left the shop to go get to my leaky faucets. But before leaving I sat in my truck across the street to make a couple phone calls. Just as I went to drive off my phone rang and it was RC Bikes calling to say my bike was ready. The mechanic Eric said it had just been a gross misalignment of the derailleurs. I think I had wrenched them out of place when my chain slipped and snarled a few times, with my full 190 lb weight on the pedals. He suggested I take it for a quick spin to make sure it behaved well under load. Solid as a rock. It was the first time in a month I'd been able to apply full force to the pedals. Then he said it was only 15 bucks because it was a quick/easy fix! So, they had me totally straightened out in about 15 minutes for 15 bucks! Awesome service! Highly...
Read moreI met the Raul at a cycling safety seminar in the early spring, and when I came into his shop in the late summer, he remembered me and even a little of my circumstances. Friendliness is in short supply these days, so that's a nice touch. Some of the businesses in Tucson...I swear they don't want your money. Hey, I've bought nicer bikes for lower prices, but not in the city of Bear Down! Wildcats!, AZ. I get it: some people think bikes are art, or they're huge bike hobbyists, or their bikes don't see the abuse of everyday life; but for the rest of us, it's a tube with wheels that gets us from here to there, and we don't want to pay $600, $800...$2000 for it! RC Bikes has probably the best prices in town for such cyclists, and they're willing to do fixing-ups to get you rolling again. Not a huge selection in store, but they definitely have the basics to get you started on the cheap (don't be obtuse and say you can find it cheaper on A__zon!) and they can order it in if they don't have it on the sales floor. When you get tired of telling bicycle salesmen that you're not a professional Tour de France-er and you just want a beater to get around town, and they point at some bike and say, "But this one's only $500!" you'll probably end up at RC. They've done right by me, even gone out of...
