An overall enjoyable dinner experience, mainly due to the delicious food.
My husband and I came here for dinner. We were greeted by a male host, not particularly warmly, who directed us to some tables to choose from. We appreciated that we were sat not overly close to other restaurant patrons and that the host was mindful of our privacy.
The first thing we noticed about our surroundings was that there was no music playing. I don't know if I have ever been in such a restaurant. Not sure if the speakers were broken or they simply don't have them, but I would encourage them to bring music to the surroundings. It helps patrons to focus on themselves instead of the many conversations going on around them.
We waited a few minutes too long to be addressed by a server. She was friendly but seemed to lack confidence in the menu. We noticed servers took notes on iPhones rather than paper. I would not recommend this approach to other restaurants; it kind of felt like they were texting instead of listening to us ordering. When I asked our server about her recommendations regarding the menu, she said, "Oh, this is good. A lot of people get it. A lot of people get that, too." Not a particularly compelling sales pitch, and it didn't seem that she knew much about the dishes she was serving. I'd encourage the owners to train their waitstaff better, and also to let them try the dishes so that they can speak honestly about the quality and flavors.
They have a vast menu, but it's sectioned off nicely as to not be overwhelming. They also have a large drink menu with Aryuvedic teas, one of which I ordered. My husband and I started with the Keema samosas, which were served hot with three different dipping sauces; a spicy salsa-esque sauce, a cilantro based one, and a sweet sauce. They were served to us by the host, who didn't remark upon what each sauce was, which I would have liked for him to do. Regardless, they were delicious, and we very much enjoyed our appetizer. Next to us, however, a couple was served the incorrect appetizer by another server, who then proceeded to argue with them about what they had ordered. We had heard them order and were able to back up their claim, but regardless, what kind of restaurant workers argue with their customers unless the individual is being entirely unreasonable? Not very good customer service.
Next, we received our entrees. We had two servings of the garlic naan, which was incredible! Definitely the best I've had. I ordered the korma, which was an incredible, flavorful chicken dish, and my husband had the chicken tikka masala. We both fully enjoyed our entrees. They had a lot of flavor but not too much. Really, a perfect Indian dish.
Ultimately, we enjoyed the food, but were slightly put off by the ambiance and service. The surroundings were ok if a little kitschy, but the no music was a huge turn off. We'd also encourage the restaurant to put more of an emphasis on customer service with their waitstaff. When I walk into a restaurant, I want to be greeted with a warm, "Hello! How many this evening?" Not a somber stare. I'd like my server to be able to make educated recommendations and speak extemporaneously about the food, given that it's an ethnic restaurant about which the general population is likely uninformed. I'd certainly like a server that would not be prone to arguing with clientele. Overall, though, I would recommend this restaurant to others, because the food is too...
Read moreNew to Tucson, came here with my husband to try this place out. Unfortunately we will need to find another Indian restaurant. We ordered a dish of spicy lamb vindaloo and lamb Tikka masala, both dishes came out covered in green leafy cilantro, and the Vindaloo that was supposed to be hot was very bland and not spicy. I asked our waitress if all of their dishes were made with cilantro or had it on top and she said yes, that they put it on everything. She offered to have them remake my vindaloo without the added cilantro and spicy. While we were waiting the owner came over and decided to give me a schpeal about how it is impossible to have any Indian food ever, without cilantro. I let him know that we frequently eat out at Indian restaurants, especially back east and all over the country and overseas when I travel for work and had never in my life seen the use if so much of the leafy greens cilantro in any Indian dish I had ever ordered. I explained to him that I knew that coriander is used frequently and is from the same plant, but the cilantro leaf is very different. He basically told me that I had no idea what I was talking about, and told me that I was lying saying I'd never had Vindaloo covered in cilantro. I was prepared to wait for the replacement dish but once the owner came over had to leave. I felt bad for our waitress who was nothing but professional and friendly. On our way out we offered to pay for our food which he ended up charging for my husbands dish (also covered in cilantro) and informed us that in 30 years he had never had an unhappy customer. I find this extremely hard to believe with the way he spoke to us and told us we were basically idiots. We tried to be as polite as possible and tipped our waitress, but would recommend going elsewhere for good Indian food. Aside from the cilantro the sauces were both very bland and flavorless in comparison with most places we have been and the soup was essentially a Mexican dish and not authentic mulligatawny. Very disappointed and hopefully the owner is more polite to...
Read moreI have to say first that I am 33 years old and have loved this restaurant since I was a teenager. Back then, great service. The owner and his wife are wonderful people. This was my first introduction to Indian food and throughout the last fifteen years I raved about this spot. The best I have ever had. I went two years ago after living in Mesa for almost ten years to introduce my husband to the best place ever I knew to serve what we love. The owner was there, a familiar face to me and the food was fantastic. I visited yesterday on a dinner date and the food was good as well, but not as yummy as it had been my previous visits. They were slammed and it seemed just a few young ladies were in charge of the show. ( You girls rocked BTW) Our waitress seemed stressed right off the bat. I could hear their Doordash orders chiming, restaurant was nearly full and there was a very large party sitting behind us 15 people or so... This did not alter my experience at all as I also work in the food industry and know how things are. Call ins, doordash etc, in house customers and one less person you need to run the show.
My only feedback is I loved the Assorted Snack plate until now when the yummy Papadums and piece of kabab were replaced with fried Paneer sticks. They lack flavor and resemble tofu (I love tofu!) but the taste wasn't appealing and I craved that piece of kabab. I ordered the papadums anyway cause they're so good! Pakora was not great as well. Also I don't remember any dishes coming with rice. It even says on the website. As usual I ordered the vegetable biyrani as our side of rice and they ended up bringing basmati rice that comes with the dish. Yay! I like that but wish I would've known after being accustomed to this restaurant. We took home lots of rice that was still almost eaten, but not needed. I appreciate your awesome service but I miss quite a few tastes of half my life ago and even just two years ago. I will continue to visit every so often but please bring back the love I so much craved visiting...
