The Papa burger is one of my favorites. Used to love going to the original A&W as a child with my family. It was a special outing and among Tulares' first fast food restaurants, if not the first. Straight out of Happy Days, servers on roller skates and in car eating. Not to mention the ice cold mugs of their famous root beer. Unfortunately my childhood favorite Jo-burger is no longer on the menu, but my 62 year old pallet has changed and I'm not so sure it would hold the same appeal. When we entered the restaurant and walked to the restroom seeing that a code is required to open the doors, Elaine shouted from behind the counter that she will open both doors for us before we even asked. Soon after I placed our to-go order and while self-pouring our A&W root beers, Elaine said our double Papa burger is ready. She is fast, efficient, and quick to anticipate customers’ needs. Would have loved to sit down and enjoy our meal and our root beers in chilled mugs, but unfortunately we have a long drive ahead of us at the end of Memorial Day...

My only way of enjoying this amalgamation of traditional American food and decor is on a road trip to see my wife’s family up north. Nothing else mattered the closer I got to A&W.
