My wife and I recently had the pleasure of hosting friends for dinner at SOMA Rooftop Bar and Kitchen, located atop the newly opened Brut Hotel. Situated alongside an enchanting lounge and seating area overlooking Dream Keepers Park, the setting is nothing short of amazing. The ambiance seamlessly melds modern furnishings with sweeping views of downtown Tulsa and its picturesque surroundings.
While our overall dining experience at SOMA was delightful, it's worth noting that the menu, albeit enjoyable, leans towards the limited side. However, this slight limitation didn't overshadow the exceptional service we received from our friendly, outgoing, and attentive server. Pricing, we found, was on par with other fine dining establishments in Tulsa.
Now, to the one aspect that prevented me from giving this experience a perfect five-star rating: the lighting. At table level, I regret to say that the lighting left much to be desired, especially when showcasing the beauty of the lovely ladies in our party and those seated nearby. The combination of high ceiling lights and a few wall accents created awkward shadows and glare, obscuring both the diners' faces and the captivating nighttime vistas of downtown Tulsa. The ambient noise level, while not entirely intrusive, was noticeable due to the abundance of glass and other hard materials in the décor.
I commend the owners and developers of the hotel and restaurant for their outstanding contribution to both downtown and midtown Tulsa. As someone who has pondered numerous redevelopment possibilities for this property over the years, I am thoroughly impressed with the realization of their vision. It surpasses even my wildest expectations.
That said, I encourage those in charge to consider reimagining the restaurant's lighting and acoustics. I envision introducing subtle, indirect lighting sources, creating a warmer and more intimate atmosphere. Picture candlelit tables in the evening and fresh flowers during the day, enhancing the dining experience. Furthermore, I understand that there are cutting-edge sound-deadening materials available that could greatly improve the acoustics, mitigating the challenges posed by glass and hard surfaces.
With the potential to transform SOMA into one of Tulsa's most enchanting and romantic dining destinations, a few thoughtful adjustments to the lighting and acoustics could elevate an already remarkable experience to...
Read moreSoma Tulsa, located atop the Brut Hotel in Downtown Tulsa, promises a culinary experience where each dish is described as a "work of poetry, fresh and bursting with flavor." However, my recent visit for a birthday celebration left much to be desired.Atmosphere: The restaurant boasts an elegant atmosphere with Nordic-inspired decor and stunning views of Tulsa. However, while the ambiance was pleasing, the service and food fell short of expectations.Service: Although greeted warmly by the manager and seated promptly by friendly hostesses, the service lacked depth. Our server, Kameryn, was polite but failed to provide detailed information about the dishes or offer recommendations. Additionally, an instance where a dish was not delivered as ordered was disappointing.Food: The appetizers, while decent, failed to impress. The hummus lacked a distinct flavor profile, and the presentation of the dishes was underwhelming. The main courses were the most disappointing aspect of the meal. The Gochujang Salmon was dry, overpowered by the gochujang sauce, and accompanied by unappetizing bok choy and lackluster coconut broth. "The Chop" featured a charred pork chop drowned in overly sweet apple butter, accompanied by bland butternut squash puree and overpowering red kraut.Overall: Despite the appealing atmosphere, Soma Tulsa fell short in terms of both service and food quality. While the setting was beautiful, the lackluster service and disappointing dishes left much to be desired. With an emphasis on struggles with the food, my overall dining experience was far from satisfactory.Atmosphere: 17/20 Service: 9/20 Food: 20/60...
Read moreSoma could have the best views of any other restaurant in Tulsa. The views from, say, The Summit Club are more sweeping, but this Soma's view is highly special.
Soma's cocktail list is varied and creative. I had the Campfire Sing-Song, which was highly enjoyable. I took note of several others that I will try when I return.
We ordered five items from the Mezze menu and enjoyed each one. The frites were especially tasty.
The entrees impressed me as limited. I ordered chicken, which was dry and the grilled veg--though tasty--were cold. Overall, not impressive. I would have ordered the burger, but I would have asked for roughly half the ingredients to be removed. Does a burger really need ham, pineapple, and portobello mushroom? One wonders is the staff added all those ingredients to be novel or to cover something. Others at our table ordered the pork chop, the ramen bowl, and the fresh pasta. The person with the pasta was the only one who said she would order it again.
Soma's staff was efficient, knowledgeable, and polite. We were both greeted when we entered and thanked as we left.
We enjoyed the view, and all of us are ready to return for cocktails on the...
