Man oh man! This is some truly authentic Mexican food. A lot of very, VERY difficult to find food here, things you would expect to see in Oaxaca, Mexico City, or Puebla. Fresh made quesadillas, made with fresh homemade corn tortillas, with your choice of fillings such as nopales(cactus paddles), flor de calabaza(squash blossom), roasted poblano, homemade chicharrón con carne(rendered pork rind with the meat), chorizo, huitlacoche(corn mushrooms, aka corn smut), and so on... Oh yeah, and they have the normal stuff like asada too, for the timid ones.
I got to talking with the owner, and he brought out a bag of chapulines (fried and seasoned crickets). These are something I've been excited to try, and thought I'd have to travel to Oaxaca find, but he sells them! We talked for over 10 minutes about all the food they make, and how they make it. A lot that is technically off-menu but you just have to ask, like sopes or huaraches.
They also have lots of aguas frescas, like jamica(hibiscus), coco(coconut), horchata(cinnamon and creamed rice) and the pepino(cucumber), which is what I got and it was not too sweet and was perfect.
This is a very home-y and friendly place, with people who care. Not everyone will "get it", but if you are a foody and are looking to explore,...
Read moreThis unassuming "hole in the wall", local family owned and operated restaurant is not only amazing, it's amazing 😁 (stated twice for effect); first time trying the food: 99.9% handmade/homemade - apart from the chorizo -which is sourced from another awesome family (not revealing the provider).
Tried the chicken (polo), pork (chicharron), steak (asada), and chorizo - with their homemade corn tortillas - I am stuffed, happily.
The drinks are amazing too, and they do use sugar, but they don't use powders; again, all homemade, and we tried the cucumber (refreshing), hibiscus (fruity, especially when I added lime), but we've yet to try the coconut.
You can't go wrong, check them out; I feel you'll be pleasantly surprised.

It misses garbanzo and the oregano is served as a spice on the table instead of being cooked in the soup. This changes the flavor. Service: the older man, possibly business owner comes off rude and inconsiderate of his employees and customers. Has no customer service skills. Everyone else, I have no issues with. Atmosphere: cute and cultural in it's own way. The location has so much activity and business it would be wise to expand, open a new location, and invest into a new upgraded style.
The location is easy to overlook, appears shabby however, it's got...
