⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars) A Must-Visit German Gem in DFW—with Room to Polish the Experience
While recording several episodes of The Whiskey Trip in the DFW area, my wife and I made it a point to stop by Kuby’s Sausage House—and I’m glad we did.
The store instantly transported us back in time, especially for my wife, who spent part of her childhood in Germany. With her mom being from the old country, walking through the aisles filled with German delicacies felt like a homecoming. From fresh bratwurst, mettwurst, and weisswurst to ring bologna and deli meats, the options were nearly overwhelming. We loaded up our cart with all the classics—German mustards, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and plenty of goodies for the mother-in-law.
Then came the restaurant experience. A short wait, and we were seated quickly. I ordered the schnitzel with hot German potato salad, red cabbage, and sauerkraut. The schnitzel was well-prepared, though the gravy was missing the mushrooms I typically expect with this dish. The red cabbage was too sweet for my taste, but the sauerkraut and potato salad were excellent.
My wife had the sausage sampler plate and enjoyed every bite—except for the overly sweet red cabbage (and trust me, she knows her red cabbage; she makes it homemade!).
There were a few letdowns, though. First, why sell authentic German mustard in the store but serve generic brown mustard in the restaurant? That’s a missed opportunity. Second, no brotchen on the menu—but they’re in the store? Come on. And lastly, our waitress was visibly frustrated and curt when asked basic questions about the food. Thankfully, another waitress stepped in and saved the experience with a helpful and kind attitude.
All in all, Kuby’s is worth the visit for the cultural experience and quality of food and products. With just a bit more attention to service and consistency between store and restaurant, it could be truly exceptional.

The food quality is fantastic both in the shop and the restaurant. When we are planning a family gathering, we go here for brats and such. I love the chicken salad (there's some in the fridge right now). We all love the wurst salad. These go great with slices of rye bread. Right now, Snider Plaza is undergoing a lot of construction. Keep visiting! They need your business. We found it easiest to park in the garage at Daniel Avenue and Snider Plaza.
Review posted in 2017: Both restaurant and specialized grocery, Kuby's is a Dallas landmark. Abutting SMU, Kuby's has been satisfying customers for years with no signs of abating.
If you go to visit for breakfast on a Saturday morning you'll likely find yourself standing in line. Rightfully so. The food is no slouch, being solid and dependable fare with a European flare. It's a communal gathering spot where the coffee is always topped up and the food is rich without being greasy (unlike other breakfast destinations). I haven't been there for lunch. Saturday is for sleeping: unless you're going to Kuby's.
The adjoining store, however, is for anytime! Being a butcher shop as well as a specialty grocery, Kuby's has something to satisfy any appetite. Some years ago I remember reading a Dallas Morning News review of the best Dallas butcher shops. Kuby's was at or near the top. No wonder. The selection of store-made sausage, meats, and salads is dependably delectable. The wurst salad and chicken salad are best of breed. There are also lots of jarred and canned European pickles, condiments and spreads I've not seen elsewhere in Dallas (though Jimmy's may rival them).
All in all, for visitors coming to Dallas, this would be a nice stop, both for a meal and for the fixin's of...
Read moreWhen you first walk through the door, you enter the "sausage house", where all the magic happens. This is where you'll find an authentic German deli/grocery, complete with their own hand-crafted sausages. (They also process wild game, which is pretty cool too!) You walk to the immediate right and there is the adjoining restaurant. It's very clean and cozy, and looks VERY Bavarian. You feel almost like you've taken a little mini-vacay to Germany on your lunch hour. My husband had the Kasseler Rippchen (double-smoked pork chops) -- and of course, I had to "test" them for him -- and wowww are they delicious! So good, and fork-tender -- I almost told them they were bad, just so I could keep them for myself :) I had my German fave -- Weinerschnitzel (pork) -- and I was not disappointed! I asked to substitute my red cabbage with sauerkraut, and our super-attentive waiter was more than happy to oblige. It was tender, perfectly seasoned, and fried beautifully. So so good! I'll be honest and say it probably wasn't the absolute very best weinerschnitzel in the history of all mankind -- but in the interest of full disclosure, I'll also say that I happily cleaned my plate :) Sure -- it's a little dated, and maybe not exactly on the cutting edge of 4-star cuisine -- but maybe it's that kitschy, home-spun feeling that is Kuby's best feature. And being in an adorable neighborhood in Dallas is a definite plus as well. So bottom line: Yeah, I'd definitely check Kuby's out again. They have an awesome-looking Frikadellen that I've got my eye on...
