We went here to celebrate 3 of my family member’s March birthdays that were last week before watching Dune part 2. It took 10mins after our menus were down and we were looking to flag down a waiter/waitress to order on a non-busy Monday night to even have our order taken then a long time until food came out & no chips/salsa refilled! We were 1 of only 2 tables in the whole restaurant around 7pm so it’s not like it was busy. My brother & I both had a coupon each from school fundraiser payback books that clearly say per person (1 was for $8 off & another for $5 off) we split the bill in half for our table of 7 & they refused to honor the 1 coupon per bill. Like they made a big deal about $13 of a large bill. Ugh! My oldest brother’s food was so overcooked his chicken was as dry as jerky! Not kidding! My chicken tortilla soup had no flavor & everyone’s food lacked salt. The birria that 2 brothers & my nephew were excited about was sub par & we were all disappointed with the overall taste of our food. The restaurant is very clean & the new waitress was very kind but couldn’t seem to have any help from her coworkers to make anything right. The bartender was so slow that my 1 drink didn’t come out until after our food & I asked about it a few times. They were out of horchata that my siblings wanted. I thought someone would have offered a song or dessert for the 3 birthdays we were there to celebrate but nothing at all after I told our waitress. Literally didn’t even wish them a happy birthday or smile at us. We will not be coming back again. We might have had better customer service at Taco Bell…

I usually have some time to kill on Wednesday nights after work, as I have to pick up one of my step-kids from an extra-curricular activity before heading home. I have been using the time to explore different business and restaurants that either I haven't been to in awhile, or are new to me entirely. Los Pepe's is among the latter; despite my semi-regular visits to Vancouver Mall, I've never actually been inside, until this week. I intended to just grab a quick drink while passing away the time, and ended up ordering two: a couple of Old Fashioned's, nothing too fancy. A little on the small size, but relatively inexpensive, at least compared to what I am used to in Portland. The complimentary chips and salsa, which I hadn't anticipated being served to me in the bar, was a welcome addition. I didn't order any entrées, so I cannot comment on the quality of the food, at this time. However, in observing the quality of the servers and service here, I spotted a few competent, tasty-looking dishes that I wouldn't mind sampling in the future. Los Pepe's seems to serve the same quality of Mexican food you might find at similarly priced establishments such as Los Jalapenos, Lindo Mexico, or any of the Margarita Factories: Mexican cuisine (outside of Mexico, anyway) tends to be as resilient to failure as it is to variety. Grabbing a couple drinks and getting a buzz while shopping at the mall, of all places, feels a bit odd, but not in a bad way. And as my Wednesday nights will likely continue to be open for the foreseeable future, I expect to be back, and hopefully hungrier next time!

The best place to eat at the Vancouver Mall. Reliable Mexican food at reasonable prices. I liked sitting at the bar. Lightning fast service. They have a habanero sauce that's not listed on the menu but you can have it if you ask. They also have cocktails to go in small mason jars. The steak quesadilla is tasty and filling. The carnitas de rez is very good. The wife likes pollo fundido. PRO TIP: They have three salsas. The default is very good. Lots of texture and good flavor, though very mild. They have a green jalapeno and a red habanero. The bartender described the heat as default 4, jalapeno 7, habanero 10. I felt the last two were similar. Neither have a lot of flavor. I like mixing in the default with others for the best of both worlds. Check out my profile for more great eateries and cocktail bars.

I had decided to take my 77-year-old father out for his birthday. We had looked over the menu online for a couple days prior to our visit. And we knew what we wanted to order. My dad wanted the green chili plate. And I wanted a combination. I think it was a number 11. Just a cheese enchilada and a bean tostada. Nothing insane. So we get there around. I don't know 2:30 p.m. and to our surprise we were handed a lunch menu and not the menu. We had been looking at online for a couple of days. And because my dad is elderly, he goes to bed early, which is why we plan to have an early dinner .The menu was completely different. The options that we had wanted to order were not on there. No worries. We checked over the menu a few times. I was looking for something I could order as an alternate. There were very few combinations but a lot of them had like ground beef taco or beef burrito. I really just wanted beans (tostada) or like a cheese enchilada. I really didn't want meat. The menu was very very limited for lunch. And my dad. He couldn't find anything either. My dad had mentioned to the waitress he had his heart set on the green chili and she was like okay. I can give you that. And I asked her if I could get this particular combination that was on the lunch menu, I was trying my best to find something to order, that had the enchilada if I can get it cheese and if I could substitute the taco for a tostada. Basically I was downgrading. I didn't need the fancy beef taco. I just wanted a bean tostada, which we all know beans are very cheap. They're like a couple pennies. Versus the high cost of meat, so I didn't think it would be a problem. I also don't mind paying extra for a substitution paying a little extra. She said I'll go check with the cooks, something about her expression, etc. It's like she didn't want to do it. She was gone for about a second and she came back and said nope. Description of said waitress, larger gal, wavy hair. She was unfriendly from the start fwiw, sorry can't do it. I don't know if she went back to ask. I don't think so and neither does my dad. I think it was really up to the waitress. Her discretion. She said well you can order a tostada on the side. Here's the thing. The lunch was $12.95 and the tostada itself was $10.95. absolutely not going to happen. I'm not going to pay double the price. Zero flexibility. My dad told me you know what let's leave. We came here to have a meal together, a birthday celebration. Let's leave. So he got up and went to tell the waitress, we'd like to cancel our order and you could tell by her mad angry facial expression. She just had a horrible attitude. She was like upset and argued with my 77-year-old father. The thinner waitress nicer waitress came over and she said you know what. Yes you guys can cancel your meal. No problem. Not a problem. So we left. I'm very glad the thinner waitress intervened and I wish we would have had her as our waitress. We ended up leaving and we ended up going to a restaurant called Lindo where you can order any combination you like, mix and match. We had a wonderful meal, a wonderful birthday celebration and we will never go back to the Mexican restaurant at the mall. It's very sad. That they have such zero flexibility. Anyways, I just wanted to give my two cents about...

Discriminated against.

My sister took me here to eat. We were seated at a table to the left of the bar when you walk in. We had been sitting there for at least 10 minutes waiting for service. The waitress was well aware we were there, and the bar asked us to be patient because she was the only one working that side. After being there for 10 minutes, two Hispanic families came in and were seated at the two other booths connected to the area we were seated in. She immediately walked over with her order book, and began taking their order right next to us. This lady was fully aware of her behavior. My sister and I chose to get up and walk out. We went to Outback instead. I called the manager of Los Pepe's and told her what had happened. She apologized.

Look, this behavior is uncalled for from anyone regardless of race. I am Caucasian, and have both Hispanic and African American family members whom I love. Nieces and nephews, and my adopted son. So why in a country where so many diverse backgrounds have got to experience their freedom, be preferential in treatment? I guess this is the America we have come to. Anyways, never attempting to eat there again, nor any of my family members. They have been notified.

To the owners response. First off, your waitress would be the only one remotely familiar with the details of our seating, so if you truly are the owner who wrote the reply below, then you wouldn't know. Your going off of her account is what this amounts to. Other people waiting for a table? Really? Sorry, no one was around, otherwise she would have brought them in and sat them at the nice clean table we first sat at and moved from.

We can all live in fantasy, and I get it, a review like this could hurt a business. No one is expecting an apology, just own it and don't repeat...

Wanted to try a new Mexican restaurant near us cuz we have yet to find one we really like. Decided on Los Pepe’s tonight, as we’ve heard from friends and co-workers that said they had good food and drinks. We waited at the front for a few mins before someone came by to greet us and seated us in the restaurant. They also have a small bar to the right side of the restaurant and offer happy hour from 3-6. We stopped in on a Tuesday hoping they’d have Taco Tuesday deals, but they did not. I ended up ordering 3 asada street tacos with rice and beans and my husband ordered a fajita burrito and a chicken quesadilla. I also ordered a margarita flight. Our waiter brought us chips and salad while we waited for our food. We waited a bit for our food but everything was delicious. The food was so flavorful that my husband said he didn’t need to add salsa because how great everything tasted. He did use the salsa anyways because he wanted some spiciness to his food. The waiter checked on us a couple times throughout our meal. Once we were finished, we waited quite a long time to get our bill. There was only 2 other patients in the restaurant so we weren’t sure why it was taking so long because the bar as pretty much empty. One of the female workers ended up bringing us a to-go box while we sat and waited for our bill. We waved down our waiter and he said he would bring our bill. We waited so long that I had enough time to walk over to a jewelry store in the mall to grab more jewelry for my piercings and by the time I got back, my husband was still waiting for the check! Food was great but service definitely could use some work. Will most likely be back to check out their happy hour menu, and hopefully the service will be...
