Easily the worst food I've ever tasted. Then they have the audacity to charge, an arm and leg for it. It would be an insult to compare this to tavern or bar food. It's undeniably glorified dollar store frozen dinner quality. Although, I've tasted better tv dinners than what I was served.
The service was awful. They're overstaffed with inattentive servers. Both upstairs and downstairs. Originally I was sat downstairs in the French restaurant and I was there watching servers flirt for about 10 minutes, before I approached the hostess stand and spoke to what appeared to be the two managers. One was nonchalant (an older lady with glasses). The gentleman was graceful and helped. However, I didn't understand how I was being ignored (and sat in the wrong restaurant) despite the restaurant being empty.
After being guided upstairs to the tavern through the elevator. I ran into a young man who was obviously high as a kite and a stocky man with a ponytail who looked like a bouncer. They both seemed highly annoyed when I politely interrupted their conversation to ask if I sat myself, I ended up seating myself since they were of no help. My server Rhonda was great! A very lovely and professional young woman but she was the only good that came out of this experience.
The shepard's pie dinner price is double the lunch price and the only difference is a half scoop more of mashed potatoes on top. No matter how much seasoning or mashed potatoes were added, this entree tasted atrocious and was grossly overpriced. I understand why they do not have prices listed online because this place on average is $25-45 per dish with the underwhelming entrees unjustifiably listed around $30-40. The cocktails were flirty as if it were a Manhattan sky lounge. There was no bourbon or whiskey signature or zero proof drink. Everything was ultra feminine and tropical which has no correlation with a tavern. There's simply no continuity between the drinks and food menus. The food is British inspired with Island style drinks. Also, my drink was very flat or maybe the bartender forgot to add alcohol. I'm not sure which but it tasted like a Capri Sun not a cocktail.
As for the space, the outdoor area (a rooftop with no view) appears to not be ready although there's furniture. I suppose it's still being assembled and arranged. The actual indoor area is not spacious, it's very cramped. It's not somewhere I'd want to socialize after work or on a weekend.
I do not recommend dining here due to the food, drinks, and customer service. All around a terrible experience although the location is nice and the downstairs interior finishes are beautiful, I wouldn't return. The staff needs to be retrained to be attentive and welcoming, the food needs to be freshened and quite frankly lower the prices (it's pub food for goodness sake), and a drinks menu revamp. Lastly, limited parking available as valet ($10) requires the front and side of the building. The only self parking option is behind the building. Be prepared to hike two flights of stairs...
Read moreFirst, the tavern is the upstairs/ rooftop sports bar and patio area. The downstairs is a fine dining restaurant that will open in a month or so.
Review below is for the tavern only: 3 stars overall.
Overall, it's a good spot with a fun vibe for drinks on a summer evening, but it could use some improvements. We wish the old R&C was still standing with the same menu (which was excellent and appropriately priced) and the same vibe. The new location appears to desire a certain upscale clientele, and thus lost its previous essence. We found ourselves remarking or complaining about numerous issues about the tavern.
Parking: Free self parking lot is relatively small behind the building and an even smaller lot is available in the adjacent condo/apartment building. Valet is available for a $5 fee.
Tavern atmosphere: cramped and hard to walk around inside. Inside hosts a single billiards table and a single small shuffleboard table. There are plenty of tvs inside but zero tvs on the outside patio. The seating doesn't seem well considered: there is ample space outside and very limited space inside. This could be rectified with some small adjustments which will help with traffic patterns and cramped feelings. Definitely get a reservation but even then you may end up with other patrons at your table if seated at one of the larger tables.
The food taste and quality is excellent (mostly). However, the menu selection is more limited than before they closed for reconstruction. And the prices are way higher than they really ought to be. You'll pay $2 per wing, at least $19 for a burger, and not find an entree less than $20. The prices weren't listed for side items. We were left wondering "if the tavern prices are this high, how much worse is the 'fine dining' restaurant downstairs going to be?".
The service is very friendly and attentive. You can tell the servers are trying to make good impressions and the managers are detail oriented.
We don't feel the "tavern" should be called a tavern anymore. The atmosphere is more bougie sports bar, and there's barely 10 beers on draft with only a few more on bottles. And there are no prices for the beer on the menu but you'll end up paying about $7 for a pint. Cocktail menu looked decent but expensive (about $12-$15 range).
Probably the most unexpected turn of events was that my wife and I were seated at a table for 6 outside after having reservations for 2. About halfway through our meal another couple was seated at the other end of the table. This was done for other tables near us as well. We were not informed of this beforehand, and it doesn't create a good atmosphere for a nice evening with your...
Read moreCould not WAIT until Rose & Crown re-opened! They were closed a long 4 years due to delayed construction. The food at the old one was always outstanding, with a casual and comfortable pub-like atmosphere, and great service. Well, we made our 1st visit for lunch to the new Rose & Crown Tavern. Very very disappointed, and sad, and will not be returning. First off, you have to walk up 2 flights of stairs to get to the top where the 'tavern' is located. Didn't see an elevator, but guessing there has to be one somewhere to satisfy the ADA access laws. There is an employee sitting on a stool inside at the bottom of the stairwell to come out when she sees you heading for their door to redirect you to the stairs. OK.... Basically you can sit at a large high-top table, the bar, or outside. Very few tables inside. None of the above are my choice, but we settled for a high-top. Many many TV's like a sports bar. The server was OK...not too difficult for 3 salads and waters. Much different atmosphere than the old one...more stiff/rigid to me, even though it is basically a 'bar' with tables. Menu more limited, pricier, and no more daily 'Specials' on a chalk board outside. So to the food. The old Rose and Crown had a steak salad to die for! I didn't even hesitate this is what I wanted, as it is also on the new menu, but with a horseradish dressing instead of the balsamic. There was still a balsamic glaze, but had to keep turning over the salad mix to try and get some coating of the bare minimum dressing. The old one had more like filet mignon medallions already cut up, then cooked. This one was a small filet, sliced and laid on one side of the salad bowl. So I had to cut it up with a regular knife. The other 2 in my party got the cobb salad....also lacking in dressing. They both requested some more dressing on the side. Neither finished their salad. I hate that this doesn't even resemble the old Rose and Crown, in my opinion. Was one of my favorite restaurants 4 years ago! Now I do realize they just re-opened, so things may change as far as entrance, menu, specials, etc. We were told the downstairs R&C Kitchen is not yet open, and would be 'fine' dining. I believe the hostess told us French cuisine? Not sure we heard that right. Anyway, I am sad that this is really nothing like the old Rose & Crown....different target...
