After living in V Beach for years, I still haven’t found a better sushi spot than Sakatomo! The intimate setting is located in a small shopping plaza with a few tables, a bar, and two large traditional Japanese sit down tables in the rear. I appreciate the quiet but comforting atmosphere, and being able to watch the sushi chef make our food in an open area behind the bar. The dining area and restrooms are always clean, and it takes no time at all to be seated. The staff is highly attentive, courteous, and prompt with taking your order. The menu selection is vast ranging from specialty rolls, to rolls a la carte, to appetizers (i.e. edamame, gyoza) to desserts. On a normal visit, my table orders 3-4 rolls and receives them in about 15 minutes. The rolls are so fresh and delicious that I have never had a roll I didn’t like. A nice touch is real wasabi and gari served with each roll (not the imitation wasabi paste usually served at cheaper sushi places). I’ve also noticed that the sushi chef is always interested in your opinion of the food, and I like being able to thank him personally before departing. Highly recommend for...
Read moreFor having lived in Japan for 9 years, food at this place was MEH! I guess the sushi would be okay for beginners to Japanese food. The chef and owners aren't even Japanese. One of the clues for you that it isn't authentic, is the way the veggies are sliced. They are still too thick and too big, rather than thinly sliced and cut with care. Gave it 2 stars as they tried to move fast and was polite in front (in front), but food preparation is still slow and one or two in your party would be left without food while the others are already eating and finishing. For authentic Japanese restaurant and sushi, I would rather go to Kyushu on Newtown Rd. This was my first and last that I would be ever going to this place. Plus they have this guy sitting at the counter talking about people (laughing about them) in the restaurant to the chef in Korean (they thought I couldn't understand). Oh well, I guess I'm asking for too much especially for a Japanese Restaurant here in Virginia Beach and not in Japan. But Kyushu does it really well! Sorry, just...
Read moreThis restaurant is very close to my house so I come here often and I plan to continue coming here because the staff is very friendly and traditional. My favorite roll to get is the Cajun roll and they have unlimited hot green tea that will always be refilled when getting low or getting cold. Their miso soup is perfect, I make sure to note that because I used to love Yama but they don't even include the scallions anymore and their bean paste is off... Their food is quality and the sushi chef (ONE chef!) Crafts the roles carefully and they never seem rushed because the quality is so high, despite him being the only one making the rolls even when it's busy. this place actually makes me want to explore other items on the menu that aren't just sushi! Also I always get a complimentary piece of ice cream for dessert if you ever get that and you have the green tea sip the green tea with the ice cream still in your mouth, it is an...
