People working there were all friendly. The cafe was cute, clean and nicely decorated. The bathrooms were clean and beautiful. The food? In one word. YUCK. Made the mistake of stopping here for breakfast while vacationing in Virginia Beach. Cute little place frequented by the locals. We figured it would be your typical breakfast place. I don't know how you can screw up breakfast but it was gross. We had chicken fried steak. The chicken tasted awful. You could clearly see it was a cutlet but it somehow tasted like it was frozen processed chicken. We didn't eat it The Country gravy missed being enjoyable because it was so overpowered by all the pepper in it. Our biscuits tasted stale. We love a good plate of biscuits and gravy and this wasn't good at all. Ordered steak and eggs. The steak was going bad. No doubt about it. I've been in food service all of my life. The steak was turning. It had an awful vinegary flavor to it and it smelled. My husband spit it out as soon as he started chewing it. The server was insistent that it couldn't taste bad because it was just cut yesterday.Im sorry. Don't tell me how my steak tastes unless you taste it yourself. I know what it tasted like and I didn't appreciate being told how my steak did or did not taste. I eat steak almost every day. This steak was absolutely turning bad. I sent it back for bacon and eggs. Half my bacon was burned. Not well done but burned. I don't enjoy the acrid taste of burned bacon. My hash browns were raw in the middle. Not enjoyable at all. Didn't eat those either. The pancakes were huge which was nice but they tasted mediocre at best. McDonald's pancakes honestly taste way better. I was not impressed with the coffee either. It was weak and not at all flavorful. I think a breakfast place should at the very least have a good cup of coffee . All in all we only ate the eggs. Everything else was left on our plates. Total waste of 50 bucks. This place leaves a lot...
Read moreAn honest review. Overall a pretty nice place. Felt clean inside. We live just down the street in Laurel Cove and have been meaning to stop by here. It’s my kinda place. I ordered the Steak and Eggs medium rare and over easy, hash browns and 4 slices of buttered sour dough bread for $16.99. Steak was underwhelming thin, had a weird taste and was so overly seasoned as to cover up the taste. Was not impressed at all. Also looked a little weird. The eggs were slightly over cooked and bland. The hash browns although good were over cooked on one side of the portion. Inedible for me. Side pancake for $1.49 was the best deal I saw. I felt like I could have made a similar quality steak and similar meal for $6-$8 at my house with ingredients from local grocery stores. Decaf coffee was not good at all, and $2.75 was not an ok price to charge for that. I drank less than a 1/4 of a cup. And my ex-wife’s aunt who used to live in the middle of nowhere South Carolina and always grew her own vegetables once told me you can go generic on anything but don’t ever go generic on ketchup. And this was some generic ketchup. The server was super nice and attentive and he was well taken care of with a 30% tip. He did his part well. Just a little disappointed in the quality of the food. I’d say either lower the prices to diner prices or change the price of the food to match the quality. Or hire a new kitchen staff, I dunno. But I’m coming back because I want this place to work out. Nice menu, I’ll be back to give it another try. Sourdough bread seemed to be the highest quality item...

I ended up at the “Sunrise Cafe” for another “Chipped-Beef Challenge” experience …
… counter-seating, off-street parking. a full bar and smiles from NOT my server, were the highlights of my visit …
to start, at $12.99, the “Sunrise Cafe” “Creamed Chipped-Beef” was the most expensive and most disappointing chipped beef of my challenge experiences …
the chipped beef was way too salty, the home fries were actually tasteless “overly” crunchy deep-fried French fries & my pre-buttered biscuit was a bit mushy …
why restaurants pre-butter items & over-salt menu items is mystifying to me, while placing salt shakers & butter on the table … I will assume, bad grill-masters are at fault?
in addition, the least chipped-beef “quantity” of all my previous “Chipped-Beef Challenge” experiences …
overall, the “Sunrise Cafe” was a disappointment …
… reviewing the full menu, the “Sunrise Cafe” appears to be the most expensive breakfast location in Virginia Beach (including oceanfront tourist priced eateries) …
low quantity, poor quality, high prices and many superior Virginia Beach eating options, will insure I will not return to the “Sunrise Cafe” …
