------- April 2025 update ------- After having dined at Crust several times over the years, I feel Crust deserves a renewed 5-star review. The food is top-shelf and taste quality has not wavered at all - especially the whole-stem fried artichoke which is just impossible find anywhere else. What astonishes is the dining setup and how laid-back and comfortable it is from walking in, to ordering, to sit down, to eating, and wrap-up. Only wish more restaurants were designed like Crust where there's no lengthy wait for snobbish or obnoxious wait staff, no pressure upsell chats, and no discriminating interfaces for table set or clean up. The complimentary oil, vinegar, chili flakes, and oregano is communal. And the price per pie only increased by couple dollars over the years. Crust is an utterly fan-freaking-tastic laid-back place to unwind and dine.
------- 2019 origin review ------- Many of you will read this and see the well-worn list of clichés embedded in my review. But for a dish with a debatable origin story tracing back to Chinese scallion pancakes and that has been adapted/adopted by all food-motivated populations on Earth, there isn't really that much left to say. Except that I had what seems to be the most authentic Pizza Margarita without having to fly to Naples, Italy.
Don't believe? Take a look at the pics and go try it for yourself. A wood-fired brick oven that delivers over 1000 degrees, ordered pizza that takes 2-3 minutes to cook, and final product eaten with a knife & fork staying true to how locals in Naples may eat it today. But this is all just show and dance, because the 5 star rating I'm giving is all about the food, flavor, and TOTAL VALUE. The [authentic] pizza is $15 with buffalo mozzarella .... cheaper than any large special pie from American pizza chains. One would easily have to pay at least 33% more at large chains or those fancy name restaurants in nearby Tyson's mall. And this location was introduced to me by another food-enthusiast like me.
So to review: Authenticity --- check Flavor --- good, check ..... would of loved more basil but it's ok Portion --- good, check Price --- awesome, check Company --- shared with fellow food enthusiast,...
Read moreVery disappointed of this place after being one of my favorites. I lunch here almost everyday from work. I leave in Alexandria and after having a great fun afternoon with my son and lil nephew, I decided to drive all way here to enjoy their pizza. We were hungry. We order our pizza and we asked for the one that has pineapple which it wasn’t in their menu, but they found it and told me that the pizza has bacon and pineapples. I ordered that one. Once the pizza arrived to our table it also contained spicy fresh peppers which that was not mentioned to us. They wasn’t happy about their mistake, however they make another one and in less than 10minutes the new pizza arrived to our table with empty bread spaces, with no cheese at all in majority of the pizza, with big chunks of pineapples and little bacon around. It looked so poorly made, from a chef who showed his unhappiness and upsetting attitude that put into making that pizza for us. The discontent of my kids were very upsetting to see. When I approached to the staff to show the pizza they were upset towards me.. they never offered another pizza when clearly majority of the pizza was bread with tomato sauce only one sliced and half of the entire pizza had cheese and bacon here and there.. they didn’t care at all.. My son ate the pizza but because he was HUNGRY! It’s horrible to eat a food that you aren’t happy with plus not well done. We felt discriminated, was horrible to see that they didn’t care, when I before today I had had so much respect for this place and the chef who makes the pizzas. My nephew kept saying that was no cheese on his slice and he was right. Sadly while I was there had to order a pizza from Dominos which is right around the corner to give my nephew a pizza. An extra money spending.. My whole entire family comes to eat here but we are not coming back! I should of take a picture of that horrible pizza they made after their first mistake. Very...
Read morePizzeria Paradiso and Pupatella are the places in the DMV where I've gotten great Neapolitan pizza. I wanted to like this place. Lots of people come here and have left great reviews, but I don't think I'll be coming back. We got two pizzas (around $15 each) and a salad (maybe $10). I was disgusted by the lack of quality of the salad (greens, small tomatoes, fennel, walnuts). There was barely any dressing, so it didn't taste any better than if i ate the parts individually. The individual parts were meh. Hard to mess up the greens, but the walnuts were few and whole, there wasn't much of the tomatoes and fennel. Just imagine the taste of greens and walnuts with little dressing, and that was the salad. Maybe $1.50 of food items costing me 7x as much.
Hey, it's a pizza place, maybe that's what earns the 5 stars. Nope! The pizza was undercooked. The oven looks the same as the one at Pupatella, so what gives? The dough is too thick! If you've been to those other places, you'll taste the flavor and textural differences right away. The ingredients on top taste fine, but they need to rework the dough. I'm not ok with paying DC prices at this location for a mediocre pizza (nevermind the salad). Sounds harsh? Because I'm angry. Imagine looking forward to a meal after a long week at work, starting with that robbery of a salad, then having the pizza completely not redeem the rest of the meal.
Who knows? Others like it, so...
