With my wife and I both off of work on Juneteenth, we decided to go out to breakfast. We went to the Four Seasons Family Restaurant in Fredericksburg VA. The Four Seasons was a very clean, comfortable place. Very much of a diner feel. We were greeted and seated by a very friendly hostess. Our server was there very quickly, and within moments we were sipping from the life-giving brew.
For breakfast my wife had creamed chipped beef with a side of scrapple and a side of fresh fruit, along with a single pancake. My wife has creamed chipped beef quite frequently, and reports that even though some places the chipped beef is very salty, the creamed shipped beef at the Four Seasons was properly prepared. The scrapple had a nice crispiness outside, and tasted as scrapple should taste. Some breakfast places serve fresh fruit as mostly cantaloupe and honeydew melon. The fresh fruit at Four Seasons contained kiwi, strawberries, apple, banana, and blueberries. Finally the pancake tasted as pancakes should, though for some reason it seemed a bit more dense and heave than a similarly sized pancake at another breakfast restaurant would be.
I had scrambled eggs with home fried potatoes, a side of grits, and two pancakes with bacon. The scrambled eggs at some places can be cooked within an inch of their lives. These eggs were cooked just the right amount, not runny but still tight. home fries were nice and included onions on my request. The pancakes were fine, with the same density comment as above. I like my bacon nice and crispy, and this bacon was within my acceptable "crispiness" scale.
As for food and service, everything was as expected. no problems and no surprises. We have never eaten lunch or dinner here, but we can only expect it would be as good as breakfast was....
Read moreI came today for a late breakfast and was seated by a hostess. The waitress was wearing her mask below her nose. Other patrons were doing the same as they came in. This seems to be the norm around Fredericksburg these days in spite of the ever present high rate of new coronavirus infections.
The really bad part was that when I asked for a refill on the iced tea, the waitress brought a pitcher and poured into my glass... while touching the rim with the pitcher and after having done the same thing at another table first. The people at that table were not wearing their masks properly with them pulled down off the nose as well. Needless to say I didn't finish my iced tea and it will be a long time before I return. I like eggs, but not enough to risk catching this virus.
While paying my check I asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the manager. I told her about what I observed. She didn't seem too upset about the mask, I expect because she also was wearing her mask off her nose. She did seem more concerned about the iced tea pitcher. I pointed out that the pitcher should not come to the table and the glasses should not be removed from the table. They need to bring fresh glasses. I'm not sure this sunk in completely. At that point the manager seemed to be very alarmed. Maybe she thought I was an inspector. Even though I was wearing a mask, I'm sure she could tell I was not smiling.
People talk about this disease "culling the herd" of the weak and less capable people. Maybe it will also cull the herd of the weak and less capable businesses. There are other restaurants that observe proper procedures during this pandemic. They will receive...
Read moreNot our first visit here, but probably our last. Service was fast and friendly, prices are reasonable. However, the food itself was very subpar, and quality has slipped a lot since our previous visits. I ordered prime rib, rare. It was delivered to me medium well, and was certainly not USDA Prime. The baked potato was delivered with eight tiny plastic and foil containers of butter and two packets of sour cream. I cringed watching my 83 year old father trying to open his sour cream packet with his teeth when it proved impossible to open by hand. Is it really that labor intensive to put butter and sour cream into ramekins? Nothing exudes class like packaged condiments brought directly to the table! The potato itself was so cold it would not melt the butter. My broccoli was also cold, and I don't mean simply not steaming hot. I mean actually cold. Dad ordered a broiled seafood platter, sadly overcooked. Mom had pulled turkey which would have been bone dry were it not for the canned gravy poured over it. I should have been clued in by the mostly empty dining room on Mother's Day, which is usually a busy evening for restaurants. It's sad to see decent places go downhill, but unfortunately that's what has happened here and we won't...
