Today I went to The Original Hot Dog Factory. It has been on my radar for awhile. After seeing a post yesterday I was motivated to go. South Jersey doesn't have the number of hot dog establishments the rest of the state has so it was good to discover this place. It is a chain with many locations; each one individually owned.
Lashaun Daniel-Drew is the owner here. Very personable and passionate about her food. I appreciate her taking the time to sit with me and talk about hot dogs and her business. She cares about quality and serving the best. All toppings are homemade and all offerings are made to order. A lot of customers in this part of the state are used to mediocre and convenience store hot dogs. Many have complained that they had to wait more than two minutes. But these same customers found out that their made to order hot dogs are worth the wait and far superior in quality. They've become regulars.
I prefer my dogs with mustard only most of the time. But for those who like toppings, they have a wide variety here. And not the absurd choices like froot loops, whipped cream, marshmallows and the like. I ordered one dog with mustard only and the other with mustard and homemade chili.
Their dogs are 6 to a pound. They also offer a 3 to a pound footlong. These dogs are made from quality Angus beef. There are also chicken, turkey, and bratwurst sausages.
As far as the brand, it is unique to this area. Like many businesses the Hot Dog Factory would rather not have it known. Especially by competitors. Which is understandable. I like to know and try to find out. I can see it from both sides. The brand was revealed on another forum. I had it once at a Stewart's in a mall and it was awful due to poor preparation and being left out to long. Here it was prepared perfectly.
Now on to the dogs. My plain dog with mustard was phenomenal. I didn't start eating it right away because I took pictures and was talking to Lashaun. Despite this my dog was piping hot. The frank itself had a great spicing and didn't over do it with the seasoning blend. A nice pleasing slightly tangy flavor. This is truly a superior hot dog. As for the bun, I haven't had a better one. It is from Boaggio's, a local bakery. I've heard of their quality beforehand. It was very fresh and perfectly toasted. A little big, but that is to hold the various toppings that are offered. They also have a bun that holds the footlong. That's what I will have next time. The homemade chili was good. Very tomatoey with some sweetness. But the frank itself was so good I don't want anything other than mustard on mine.
There are very few places that I will travel more than an hour to. This is one of them. Excellent fresh product, great service, immaculately clean. And an owner who is hands on and passionate. All of her ingredients are the highest quality and most expensive. Lashaun's son and daughter work there. Truly a family business. Check out their menu; they offer a lot more than hot dogs. I'd love to try some of their other items but I don't think I'll be able to not get the hot dogs. The Original Hot Dog Factory is one of the few hot dog joints that I would consider a destination stop. Highly...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI see all the great reviews, so I assume I just got unlucky. I paid for cheese on my burger, which they forgot, and one of the specialty dogs I ordered was replaced with something completely different. Outside of the accuracy errors, the food was okay. The fries definitely weren't cooked enough, most were still white and hard. The dogs were how I love them, kind of wrinkly and burnt with good flavor. The bread was very good with a perfect bread to dog ratio. Toppings were mid.
Here's my issue - 2 cooks, 4 items, almost 50 minutes waiting as the only dine in guests to speak of with 1 to go order ahead of me. I was told by the cashier, who was very nice, that they had a lot of call in / door dash orders. I'm a little skeptical of this because I didn't see one dasher or bag in their pick up area the entire hour + that we were there, but besides the point, a restaurant should always ensure their in house guests get priority, and making a family with 2 toddlers wait almost an hour for some hot dogs is kind of crazy. I wound just taking our food to go, as my kids had to use the bathroom and they didn't have one.
Last note, maybe having condiments and napkins on your tables would be better than a bunch of bottles of hand sanitizer. Covid is over.
I'd love to give this place another shot, because I'm sure they could do better, and the food quality is definitely there, but as I've noticed, the owner is more interested in replying to 5 star reviews than recovering unhappy potential...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs someone who has lived in the Voorhees area for some time now, I often explore local restaurants and shops, always eager to support small businessesāespecially those within our community. My husband and I had plans to try Girl with a Grill last year, but unfortunately, they were closed during our visit. Today, I finally had the chance to stop by.
First, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The cashier/waitress was extremely pleasant, and I believe I had a brief interaction with the owner, who was just as friendly. The inside was cozy, and I appreciated the option to enjoy my meal outdoors, where there was plenty of space.
However, when it came to the food, I was a bit let down. I ordered a combo meal, totaling $14.66, which included a beef hot sausage and fries. Sadly, the hotdog was a very small, shriveled-up piece of beef sausageāclearly microwaved, based on its rubbery texture and appearance. As we all know, the microwave isnāt a hotdogās best friend. The fries were also sparse, leaving me underwhelmed overall.
I genuinely love supporting Black-owned businesses and was really rooting for this one. While I may not rush back based on this first impression, if my husband decides to give them a try, Iād be willing to return and sample something different.
Hereās hoping for growth and better execution in the...
