Wow! What a mistake. I should have known not to order delivery from this place when viewing the drink options. The options are several types of caffeine a $6 water and soda. Just soda. Well, I ordered just a soda which was charged but never delivered with the rest of the order. I called the delivery driver to double check. My order included a gyro and salad. I'll take a picture of how they boxed this monstrosity. So far I haven't tried the disaster due to my body going into shock over the overly salted round calamari. One would expect a tentacle or two when ordering a $14 appetizer. I'm seriously dehydrated from the calamari. I finished a 16oz bottle of water and will jump in the shower to prevent further dehydration. I had to throw the rest away. Perhaps I toss it along my doorway as an insect repellent?
The fries, which were included with the gyro, were opened on one side of the box takeout container. I'm not touching them so can not give a review about its taste.
The pork chops came with the side salad, as indicated on the menu, with some surprise string beans and roasted potatoes. Would have been nice to know the sides in advance.
This is my first and last experience with this "restaurant". I'm going back to cooking home meals or eating cereal for dinner. For the life of me, I can't wrap my brain around poor food quality from restaurants. They literally have one job to do and that is to prepare food to order. How about listing everything that is served on the side of your $24 pork chops and stop taking the options out of the customer's hands. Also, how about making tasty meals which would guarantee repeat business. If you'll excuse me my eyesight is blurring due to the large salt intake.
Update: The pork chops and sides went over well with my father. He ate everything...
Read moreThe atmosphere and service at Black Olive was great. Our waiter was very attentive and the space feels much bigger than it is thanks to some cool modern design choices. The acoustics aren't the greatest, but really, have you ever been in a quiet Greek restaurant?
Moving onto the most important part, the food, I would sum up my first meal here as not bad. It was not the best Greek food I've ever eaten, but it was not terrible by any means. I love Greek food. So as far as the staples go, I know how they should taste. I know every restaurant puts their own spin on things but I felt like most of the food here was bland. It seemed as though the chef was trying to conserve his limited supply of spices.
We started out with the saganaki which was delicious. It was not flambéed tableside with ouzo as I've enjoyed in some other restaurants, but I certainly can't hold that against them. The spanakopita was good, but instead of being layered as it usually is prepared, it was more of a roll where all of the filling was wrapped with layers of phyllo. The phyllo was nice and crispy, but the filling lacked the depth of flavor that you'd expect.
The house salad was unique and very tasty. The whole salad was finely shredded which I've not seen before. I ordered the pastitsio, my favorite Greek entrée. The dish was bland and a bit dry. The béchamel formed a solid cap on top of the pasta. For dessert, we had baklava and ekmek kataifi. While not bad, they too were generally lacking in flavor.
I'd like to think it was just someone in the kitchen being stingy with herbs and spices the night I was there and maybe it would be better next time. This is certainly not a restaurant that I'd refuse to try again, but reading similar comments in other reviews makes me think our meal might...
Read moreIf you love Greek Food and in the Voorhees area you must try Black Olive. As I walked in, I was greeted by what reminded me of a Greek grandma - this was a great first impression and knew I would be in for an authentic experience. I arrived for an early dinner around 4 - the restaurant was very clean and had nice decor; very nice atmosphere!
Adi (the server) was very nice and attentive; she provided bread with delicious olive oil as a small appetizer. This restaurant is BYOB - which was great for bringing in my own favorite alcoholic beverages to have with my meal and Adi was very accommodating with glasses and ice for the beverages! Yiamas! 🥂
Let's talk about their food: I decided to start with their "Black Olive Chips" which were a mix of zucchini and eggplant chips, lightly battered / fried and perfectly staked in a plate with a side of taziki -Very delicious!
On Saturday and Sundays they have a special Lamb dish however once I found out their Whole Fish was Branzino, I knew I had to go for it. (I will definitely be back to try their Sat/Sun Lamb special 💯
The Branzino 🐟 comes with a small side salad with a light vinaigrette dressing and a small side or grilled asparagus - absolutely delicious, I enjoyed filleting the fish myself and it brought me right back to Santorini and eating fish while overlooking the Agean Sea. 🙌🏾
If you are looking for authentic Greek food, look no further - give Black...
