I want to preface this by saying I will change my review once these issues are addressed… And if nothing changes, you will go the way of every other establishment that has come and gone at this location.
First off, I would have given this a 1 out of 5 since middle of the road reviews go unnoticed, but I cannot do that to a local business that has real potential. HOWEVER, I will not be going back until they get rid of their INSANE prices. $20 for sandwiches with less meat than a large Arby’s roast beef sandwich (Which used to be at that location)??? Give me a [BAD WORD] break and stop being greedy. I saw reviews about the prices, but I read on the menu where it says something to the effect of “If you finish your meal, then we’re doing something wrong.” Seeing that made me think “Well it’s expensive, but I’ll get 2 good meals out of it.” I was wrong. The reviewers I wanted to call out were right. Less than half a pound of Corned Beef on store bought rye (If you’re going to charge that much, at least humor us and bake your own bread). So yeah, I was still very hungry after eating it.
Ridiculous prices for equally ridiculously small portions. If I’m going to spend that kind of money, I’m not getting a sandwich and tiny pickle, I’m getting a steak somewhere.
The menu is terrible. It’s assumed you know exactly what comes on a sandwich, what your options are, and that you know how everything tastes. No descriptions on most of the items. Most places that charge double digits for sandwiches also include French fries, or salad, or soup. Not this place. Everything is A La Carte. I just ordered what I knew I liked because I wasn’t going to google items on their menu. The design and colors of the menu are good. The lack of descriptions is bad. They dedicate an ENTIRE page to the owner’s family history and background to the Deli. Who really cares? Your family started the first Supermarket in Dayton? That’s pretty neat, but what does that have to do with why I should ever come back?
Honestly, the prices and dinky little pickles are such a smack in the face that it’s going to take A LOT to get me back there. I’m not reviewing the food because I don’t remember anything other than the disappointment when my Corned Beef was set down in...
Read moreWe visited All The Best Delicatessen hoping for a solid, classic deli meal. Between the two of us, here’s what we tried and how it all landed.
For the main dishes, I had the matzo ball soup and half a hot pastrami on rye, which came with a pickle on the side. The soup ended up being great after a little salt—nice, comforting flavor and a matzo ball with great texture. The pastrami had a solid flavor, but it was way too chewy and had a bit of gristle, which made it tough to enjoy.
My sweetheart had a frankfurter with sauerkraut and a side of cucumber and onions. She really enjoyed the frankfurter—it had good flavor—and she said the sauerkraut was outstanding.
I also tried a knish, which wasn’t what I expected—more of a thick, breaded exterior (almost like cornbread) with mashed potatoes inside that didn’t have much flavor beyond some salt and pepper. I was hoping for something flakier and more savory.
The pickle that came with my sandwich and the cucumber and onion salad both had a strange aftertaste. Maybe it was the brine they use—it was different from the usual deli flavor, and neither of us cared for it.
For dessert, we had a seven-layer cake and a mini babka cake. The seven-layer had good flavor but was overwhelmingly sweet. On the other hand, the babka was a hit—moist, rich, and perfectly balanced.
As for service, it started off okay, but once our food came, our server disappeared. When it was time to pay, we had to flag someone else down—possibly the manager—to help us out.
All in all, it was a mixed experience. There were definitely some bright spots—the matzo ball soup, the frankfurter and kraut, and especially the babka—but also some things that didn’t work for us. however, I think I would give it another try. I used to have all of these things when I was younger I missed being able to go to a good...
Read moreLet me start with the service, then I will move onto food, atmosphere, then manager interactions.
Heather was our server, she was not attentive. We didn't get a three minute check in, as servers typically do. We had to stare the waitress down and request service instead.
I purchased the bestie burger pointing on the menu for the entree that included fries. I only received a burger. The bun was hard and chewy, the burger patty was bland, as well as dryish and chewy. The pickle on the plate was also dry. For a $13 burger you would expect better than what you get at Wendy's for $2, boy was I wrong.
The atmosphere was super loud inside.
The manager didn't have a name tag, nor did she supply her name. I informed her about the burger, I said I would eat it and pay for it, but it was the most chewy burger I have ever eaten, bland, and the bun was hard almost as if it were stale. It was one of the worst burgers I have ever had, my meal also didn't come with the fries. I said I will now need my fries to go. I was brought some soggy fries in a basket, for which I had to ask for a box. This comes back to staff not being attentive or listening. The manager never once tried to remedy any issues. I also informed the manager that our server Heather did not do the typical followup with her tables. At which time the manager tried to explain it was due to an influx of customers. I informed her that is unacceptable and not a good explanation.
I paid $20 including a tip for just a burger and soggy fries. Later, the meal gave me the runs.
I will never again go to All The Best Delicatessen. Because, it was all the worst experience.
Save your money, go to Wendy's instead if you...
