Was just walking around this cute neighborhood hoping to find some sort of egg and cheese/coffee situation despite it being 11:30am, and this cafe was exactly what I was looking for and more! 1. Wanted to support local (especially if immigrant-owned) 2. Reasonably priced breakfast at noon, and anything else being a plus. Not only do they have lovely coffee, the egg & cheese on everything bagel was clearly very thoughtfully cooked. I requested lettuce/onion and she asked if cooked inside the eggs was good or if I wanted it separate, with tomato, jalapeño, etc. how they like to serve it (which is basically my wildest breakfast dream come true.) It was made with onions sautéed into the eggs, delicious minced jalapeño & tomato, cheese, served freshly hot and with a warm smile! The Ethiopian woman who rang it up and also made/served my order was so kind and warm, to top it all off. Highly recommend stopping here if you appreciate local businesses with nuanced and thoughtful cuisine and atmosphere. I really got a sense of Ethiopian hospitality which will last in my memory. Will be back every time...
Read moreIncredible coffee shop. The food and the atmosphere is so much better than your average spot. The food is authentic, delicious, extremely fresh (made daily), and reasonably priced. There's also a surprising amount of variety on the menu (never gets boring), and I've never had a bad dish. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly, but with plenty of outlets and table space for working (and everything is always clean). It's like a little haven for peace in the area. The owners/staff are extremely friendly, good people, who are uniquely sincere in their exchanges. I always feel lucky to be around them and like they make my day better. My only piece of advice is to look at their entire menu, otherwise you won't be able to guess everything they have, and they almost certainly have multiple items you will love. Wonderful people, wonderful food, coffee, fresh juices, etc. Just go, you will like it. And remember to return their kindness because they...
Read moreI almost don't want to review it for fear of this hidden gem being overtaken by hype and becoming packed. However, it would be a disservice to not support the good people at Amen Cafe, so I will. This quaint, lowkey spot, tucked in the corner of Georgia Avenue and easy to walk by, is a MUST visit. The hospitality is unlike most cafes. They're attentive, kind, and make you feel secure in a home away from home feel. The Ethiopian coffee is some of the richest and boldest in the city, and if you want a huge wake up, get the ginger coffee. The fresh juice is refreshing and revitalizing, and always hits the spot. The pastries and sandwiches are solid as well, but by far if you're going to visit, get the Ful or Ful special, its a beautiful, rich spread that is my personal go to. I didn't even know I liked ful and now I'm hooked. I tried other cafes, no one in the city makes better ful than here. So yeah, I love my cafe, I hope it never leaves....
