Brew on U — Restaurant in Washington

This coffee shop is conveniently located mere steps away from the U Street / Cardozo metro station, and in the lobby of a youth hostel. Their prices are about what you'd expect for this area ($3-$4 for a standard coffee, $5-$6 for something more boutique) and they have coffee and non-coffee options as well as a small pastry window with basics like croissants and empanadas. The service at the bar is good, and the space includes high chair/table and bench seating for maybe 15 - 20 people total. Unlike a regular cafe though, tables won't be wiped down and set up for you so make note of that if you're someone who looks for full service.

If you plan to get some work done from here, note that they close at 2PM and that because of its location in the lobby of a hostel, there is a lot of foot traffic and chatter - more than your average...

Located inside a capsule hostel just off of U Street NW, its selling point is its location. It's around the corner from the U Street Metro station and popular U Street NW with its many restaurants, bars, and stores.

The space itself is large. There's no consistent decor or theme. It's really just a few more-bare rooms with random wall hangings, a neon light, and places to sit.

The cafe itself offers a full espresso menu. For almost $7, I ordered a medium pumpkin spice latte. It was among the worst I've ever had. It lacked any flavor and tasted more like burnt coffee.

It may have been just an off day so I'll go back and try again since I've always heard great things...

Brew on U wasn't open at 7am, even though it was SUPPOSED to be open. I wanted to order a coffee before I had to leave the hostel early one day for my flight home. It was already 7am and nobody was there, I just heard someone doing something in the back part of the coffee shop. I waited a while, ordered a coffee online on their website with the hope that someone would come to the counter. On their website, it said my order was ready to be picked up in 10 minutes. It wasn't.
