About a year ago I came to the breakfast spot that formerly occupied where Call Your Mother currently sits. As a breakfast sandwich enthusiast, I was looking forward to becoming a regular at local spot. To my disappointment, the owner behind the counter was exceptionally rude and the food was shockingly mediocre for the price. Anyone could deep fry frozen hash rounds and serve foldable eggs on a brioche bun. Not only was the food simple, it was poorly balanced and either too salty, too fatty/rich, or bland and uninspired. I came, was disappointed and left a negative review on their business in the first weeks of opening. I was not sorry to learn their business had closed.
Upon learning Call Your Mother was going to try and open in their location, I was intrigued. Despite living in the DC area for so many years I had never been to a Call Your Mother location, but had heard only good things about them. It seems my prayers for a good breakfast shop were answered. Call Your Mother exceeded all expectations on the first go and I look forward to visiting their stall every weekend now.
I ordered “The Bacon Sun” and a single Latke. First of all, upon looking at their menu I was a little unimpressed because I was hoping for really creative breakfast sandwiches. However, do not judge by its cover. Even their simple Bacon Egg and Cheese is one of the best I’ve ever had. The bagel is the closest thing to an NYC bagel I’ve had in the area. Small and dense, good chew, and no need to be toasted. The bacon is both incredibly high in quality and layered extremely well. They put it on the top and bottom of the sandwich, which is unheard of. The egg is folded into many layers and as cheesy as it needs to be. Then there’s the honey, and this BALANCES the sandwich. I was weary because it had no sauce, but the honey is the perfect sauce for this sandwich. One of the best in the area.
Now the latke. What impressed me the most about the latke was the way it was evenly seasoned throughout. The uniform shape was impressive too. The single latke comes with ketchup, and it needs ketchup. For $2.50 it’s actually a better deal than a McDonald’s hash brown, and higher quality too.
I will be coming back to this location weekly to try something else and maybe even stick the latke inside the...
Read moreI have been to multiple Call Your Mother locations, but this was far and above the worst experience I have ever had.
With CYM, you expect a certain level of chaos and to have to be patient. However, having been a regular customer for 4 years, I have never had a negative customer service experience until visiting this location.
I ordered ahead online and was told my order would be ready at 11:44. I arrived around 11:50, and was told my order was not ready. By 12:00, I still had not been notified my order was ready. Having to stand in the rain, I was understandably frustrated.
When I asked again, I was handed my order and told that I must have not been paying attention. I then asked for the two employees names, which they hesitated to say. Eventually they identified themselves as Cameron and Noah, which I am not sure are their actual names. They then stated that someone was coming out to talk to me as I was walking away. When I clarified that they were still talking to me, Cameron sarcastically stated “Are you serious, man?”
I appreciate that the manager, Caitlin, did come out to talk to me. When I explained that my order took at least 15 minutes over the expected wait time, she blamed it on them being busy. I then said that I understand they get busy, but the attitude from her employees was not acceptable. She did apologize, but didn’t offer any solution to rectify my experience.
I think this location is new, and it shows in their service. The unprofessionalism was honestly shocking for CYM. I won’t be returning to this location, and it will be awhile before I return to any Call Your...
Read moreCall Your Mother Deli is an outdoor vendor located at National Landing Water Park, right in front of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Its the perfect stop for a bagel when the weathers nice. Casual, quick and full of flavor. I ordered online and had it waiting for me when I got there. I tried a few things on the menu.
Pastrami Sun City: A great breakfast bagel. Not overly bready. The egg was fluffy and had a good amount of cheese. The pastrami was packed with flavor. Solid for breakfast.
Hibiscus Cove: Listed under their lunch bagels. One of the more unique bagels I've tried. Smoked salmon, avocado, korean-marinated cucumbers, seaweed flakes and shredded carrots. Refreshing
Black and White Coffee Iced: Smooth and flavorful. I got it iced to enjoy while walking around on a sunny day - it wasn't watery or overaly sweet. Just really good coffee.
Pan de Yuca: I eat the Pan de Yuca pretty often, this was one of the largest ones I've gotten. Had the right amount of cheese. Great value for the price.
Latkes: Unexpectedly great! This shredded potato side was the suprise hit of the visit. Soft on the inside. Something I would order again. I think they forgot the apple jam on the side but I imagine that would take it to the next level.
Overall...
