I am a black woman and so is my sister. We both went to this location for the first time knowing its history but thinking it would be okay because it’s in DC. But nope. Even with this store being in DC you can feel the judgement. No greetings, no one came up to us, no smiles, just quiet when we walked in. We were just teenagers looking around with our father. After some time we realized this place wasn’t for us. We didn’t feel included, we could tell they wanted us out immediately as soon as we walked in. As a person of color when you know. you know. There were 2 middle aged white women staring at us with the most dirty looks you could think of. They were whispering and pointing at us. They were trying to be discreet but they also wanted us to know how they felt about me and my family. The sad part is that it was obvious. The workers could tell but they did nothing about it because they felt the same. I have NEVER felt this uncomfortable in my life. Never expected it in the DMV area. Very disappointed.
I went again, the workers “nice” but just a basic I have to be nice. Like they just seemed so over it. Doesn’t care, will complain about everything to their co-workers out-loud like you’ll hear the whole convo it’s so unprofessional and weird. And I’ve worked extreme retail, I understand that you don’t want to have a smile on your face, but like I genuinely shocked. If that wasn’t bad the overall vibe was so off. Like everyone who shops their (mainly white audience) WILL stare at you like it’s NOTHING. Like just no shame. I never felt so uncomfortable I honestly don’t know why I gave them another chance. Plus no offense but Brandy Melville is still fast fashion, not as fast as most but their low quality basics are not worth your experience. The brand is extremely controversial and not accepting. Plus all of their items fit weird so you have to go in store to try it on, (just to be disappointed with the item and the experience) It’s like the store was set back in the 1970’s or something the way they view any person black person.
I emailed brandy (not this specfic store but in general) about my experience and they completely ignored me. I’ve emailed them about order issues before and they seem to answer quick if it helps them benefit. The funny thing is I thought they would actually acknowledge my experience because my friend emailed them at the same time about her unfortunate experience and they responded and aided her quick. The only difference was she wasn’t black and I am. Very sad but...
Read moreI love brandy the one where I live went out of business, so anytime I am on the east coast or in California I have to pick up some pieces. I have been to the brandy georgetown location two times, the first time my experience was amazing, the workers were kind helped me find what I need, and had manners(saying thank you, welcome in, have a good one, etc). the experience was honestly so heartwarming and made me feel like I belong and made me want to spend more money than I had already spent. now the second time I went was Sunday, June 25, 2023. I had the worst brandy experience ever, I have never encountered such unfriendly staff or girls. at first, I was fine shopping, but when I went into the fitting room with a pile of clothes off the hanger (since the clothes are just thrown onto the hanger) I was stared up and down. the worker that “helped me was a blonde European woman who was extremely rude. there was another girl who had dyed red hair who was in the fitting room, I smiled at her and she gave me a death glare. mind you these are college graduates or millennials working. they treated me like I didn’t have feelings or I wasn’t human. these girls are old(and have lived through so much) being rude to their customers. when it was time to check out the same European girl helped me, she said the receipt printer wasn’t working so I would get an email receipt. I never got my receipt I have an account and everything. once I left someone before me’s bag went off and the girls all stared at me like I stole something after I dropped almost $300. mind you I am a black woman who is very quiet and reserved, I was taught not to steal and to be a good person. whoever is hiring these individuals needs to have a conversation with their workers and training to be good people. I understand the whole brandy Melville mean girl thing, but it costs nothing to be kind. I work in retail as a cashier I deal with all sorts of customers, but no matter how they treat me I am always kind and patient with them. I would never roll my eyes, stare down, or be rude to my customers it feels wrong. Brandy Melville Georgetown, do better, hire some diverse individuals, and treat everyone with kindness. To any ordinary person reading this spend your money on another brandy on the east coast like the Connecticut or New York...
Read moreI used to shop here at Brandy Melville at this location in 2019. The employees are very irresponsible and rude. They lack diversity in their employees. Most of the employees are all white. There is zero Black, Asian, Hispanic, Arab, South Asian, and mixed race. At the fitting room, the lady told me that you cannot have your purse inside the fitting room which is a stupid policy. The cashier look like she didn’t want to serve me because the way I look and my income. She was like “Oh, you don’t have any money.” I was like “She shouldn’t make that comment or assume about a person’s income.” That is none of her goddam business. She should keep it to herself. There were few parents and most of the teenage girls were alone. The employees should know about DC and sometimes it is not safe for young girls to be by themselves due to unpredictable crimes like kidnapping, trafficking, etc. Their clothing fit me at the beginning and then it didn’t fit me no more. I lost so much weight fitting into these clothes that made lost my period for 3 months. After 3 months, I gained my period back and gained some weight to be at a healthy weight. I decided to not wear these clothes anymore and went to look for another brand that fits me better than this brand. I had body image from this brand. This brand is very exclusive and they don’t know about what is considered to be underweight, healthy weight (normal), and overweight. They need to educate themselves a little bit more and the brand needs to train these staff about BMI. If you look at these models on their website and social media, they look so anorexic and their weight is so underweight. This can cause eating disorders and body dysmorphia. This is unhealthy and unacceptable for this brand to promote this especially to teenage girls and young women. Do not listen to the positive reviews. It is fake. Read the negative reviews and it is true. Do yourself a favor, go to H&M, Urban Outfitters, and UNIQLO. They are more body inclusive than...
