Ā Ā Ā Read moreI brought my family here after a quick galavant around the American History Museum. The coffee shop was a bit further away than we thought it was and it was pretty windy and cold outside, so when we arrived at DUA DC cold, we were weary and ready to sit down for a little bit.
On stepping inside the door we were immediately met with a line that was almost out the door. Turns out it wasn't actually that much of a line it was really just the result of more than three people standing in front of the counter. The shop is pretty narrow and there's not a lot of room near the front so things get congested pretty quickly, especially at busier times.
In any case, we were able to place our order pretty quickly and went hunting for some seats. Unfortunately there really wasn't much available. We came at a pretty busy time and there were only about 5-6 tables inside which were all filled. It was about that time that my 6-month-old decided that she was hungry and would cry unceasingly until she had eaten. The problem was that there was literally nowhere for us to go ā we just kind of wandered around with a crying infant trying to figure out what to do. Finally, I went up to the counter and asked the staff if they had any place where my wife could feed that wasn't the bathroom. Our entire experience changed from this point forward...
Immediately one of the workers got her manager and asked if my wife could use the breakroom to which she unhesitatingly said yes and personally led her back and got her comfortable. About that time a table opened up and our drinks were ready. Seeing I was short-handed, the staff up front even offered to help me carry some of the drinks back to our table. It was a small thing but literally changed everything about the experience for us.
The coffee itself was good. DUA has their own speciality roasts and do pour-overs on the weekends, which is a pretty rare thing for most coffee shops because it takes so much time. My wife ordered a vanilla latte and enjoyed that as well.
Overall, we'd definitely go back here in the future. DUA really isn't a great place to sit and do work or hang out for an extended period of time, but it is a good cup of coffee and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI love it! It was one of 2 coffee shops that I had already bookmarked before arriving at DCA. It was just too unique to pass up. There aren't any coffee shops in my area that specialize in Indonesian coffee. This was going to be a treat.
We were greeted by an indoor mural called "Kamboja Prayer" by Miss Chelove. She's a well-known local artist. Perhaps you've seen her murals around the DC area. I really like how the opened hand greets you when you walk in, but also has the same affect when you're leaving the coffee shop from the other side of it. It's a calming mural with the background of coffee leaves and berries. A very nice touch.
We hit this spot at a good time. There was no line. We selected a few items from the menu. I just had to get the oat pandan cold brew, while my husband selected the iced mocha latte. They were both refreshing and delicious. We also received 2 beef empanadas and a pischok (or pisang coklat). The beef empanadas were very tasty. It reminded me of pastelitos de carne, only in a baked empanada form. They have a cheese & onion empanada as well. The banana chocolate pischok had a good flavor, but the wrapper wasn't crispy. I think it's supposed to have a crispy texture like lumpia or banana coins. But, I understand that they probably don't fry them up at this location. It was still good. It just would have been been better if it was crispy.
All in all, it was a great visit. There are tables inside and outside. There are also hidden nooks with lounge seating as you walk towards the back of the shop. I did see a continuous bench along the wall, as well as a little bar seating area in front of where you place your order. It's a great place for coffee, tea, or a light snack. We would definitely return any time we're in the vicinity of McPherson Square. A pour over of the Wanoja Natural or a Kopi Kedua will be on my list...
