Henry's Soul Cafe — Restaurant in Washington

First & foremost as much money as this establishment makes I would think they would invest in a ‘WET FLOOR SIGN’ im currently pregnant & easily could of slipped. Customer service from management/ short light skin black hair cook in the back is POOR. I didnt catch her name which is why i described how she looked. Didnt see a hair net or gloves on at all coming to & from the kitchen. Greens were horrible seemed rushed with BIG CHUNKY STALKS left on greens & undercooked and no seasoning. I get stuffed chicken all the time which comes with stuffing today it seems as though the staff was eager to leave rushing to make orders as my plate had the smallest scoop of stuffing doused with souch gravy to the point where the stuffing was so overloaded with gravy it was soggy before even leaving out the establishment. I work in food service so as paying customer when I asked for a separate container of stuffing without gravy( as I was not eating right then & there) instead of the lady cook providing a courtesy container for the inconvenience as she can see the gravy is overloaded she replied very rudely “thats not how this work” and initially wanted to take the already paid for container of food back in the back kitchen just to remove the small scoop of stuffing that was going in the trash anyway because it’s already been opened & touched by the customer. Im concerned for health reasons of cross contamination & saving scraps of food to use for other customers after me because normally I’ve never witnessed such a thing at other restaurants. Maybe she wanted to save for herself to enjoy a snack in the back on her break after a long hard day of working in a hot kitchen.& the mac was mid. I recently visited Henry Soul Food Cafe after seeing a recommendation on TikTok. I was excited to try new soul food in the city and went there around lunchtime. I went and spent about $55. Here’s a detailed account of my experience:

Pros: No line Great customer service Clean environment -Srawberry Lemonade 10/10 -Chicken wings were ok. Not terrible. Just taste like chicken

Order Details: Platter 1: Trout Rice and gravy Mac and cheese Platter 2: Whiting Mac and cheese Yams Platter 3: Chicken wings Greens Mac and cheese Additional Item: Salmon cake sandwich Lemon Pound Cake

Cons: Some of the worst mac and cheese I’ve ever had. Had no taste. Most of the food tasted like it was made the day before. Fish (whiting and trout) didn’t seem to be made to order (it wasn’t grease hot, and the order was ready too fast). -Rice and Gravy tasted like minute rice and powered gravy. Greens lacked flavor. Yams needed more sugar. One of the corn muffins was rock hard. The salmon cake sandwich tasted and looked like it was reheated from the previous day.

Summary: I had high hopes for this place, looking for good soul food in the city, but unfortunately, it let me down. The food quality was subpar, and it didn’t meet the standards I was expecting based on the recommendation. All of the food did not taste fresh and tasted like it was made...

Wanting some true soul comfort food. Henry's came up when I did a Google search. It's been at least 5 years since I've been there but let me say that it's always good to go back someplace you have been and not be disappointed. I ordered the smothered chicken which you can have the chicken baked fried, I chose fried with macaroni and cheese and string beans. My oldest ordered the smothered turkey wings with mac & cheese and collard greens. My youngest I got him the fried chicken with mumbo sauce, mac & cheese and greens. The dinners were absolutely delicious and just as I remembered flavorful, plentiful in portion size, I could not eat all of mine and actually have lunch for today. Everything was seasoned well and we throughly enjoyed our meals. Henry's is known for their sweet potatoe pie and I am not a big lover of sweet potato pie but I tried the pie and I will definitely say I will be getting more. The pie was absolutely awesome. I recommend Henry's as I would have years ago if asked about a good soul food place to eat from and I am definitely going back.
