We decided we wanted something fast, easy and cheap before grocery shopping. We've driven past Taco Time several times, but assumed it was probably just OK food akin to Taco Bell or one of those 'berto type places. We were wrong on both fronts. Here's something everyone should know if they don't already, if they have pictures of the food on the menu, you know you may be in trouble. It's not always for certain, but it's a good indicator when tacos need to be shown on the menu next to the word taco.
This place is strange to say the least. The menu was unlike anything I've ever seen in any sort of Mexican food place, running the entire gambit. Strange names to things, mexi-fries which are tater tots, etc. We ordered a two chicken taco meal with mexi-fries and an order of regular nachos.
When they brought the food out, it looks just like something a working mom would make for her kids on a busy weekday evening. The taco shells and all of the ingredients of the tacos looked and tasted exactly like the packaged shells you get at the grocery and the chicken tasted like the precooked chunks of chicken meat you can buy in a packet, meaning it's barely chicken. The lettuce and tomatoes were roughly chopped or sliced and the cheese was bland. It just totally reminded me of something I had as a child after school or something. That being said, for the price, totally not worth it, considering you could assemble this all yourself for 1/3 of the price. I mean, throw the tots (mexi-fries) in the oven, reheat the chicken chunks and quickly cut up a tomato and some lettuce and viola, taco time!
The nachos were pretty much on the same level. Chips from the grocery store with cheese melted over it from the oven, which is pretty good, but once again, could easily be recreated at home. The toppings were par to sub-par from the black beans to the "pico" which is just tomato and maybe some onion. It was all haphazardly thrown together, not that I need each chip to be perfect, but it was pretty all over the place. The guacamole on the side was brown when they brought it to the table and once again, tasted like guacamole you can buy at the store. The menu also shows the caloric counts for each item, and these nachos weigh in at a hefty 1200 calories before adding any meat! What!? Holy calories! At $5 before adding any meat, it will fill you up, but man, I could think of better ways to get full on $5 and not consume 1200 calories.
I agree with the multiple reviews that the tots are super salty. The salsa that they have next to the ketchup is very very strange. It has a little spice, but the flavor reminded me of clamato or bloody mary mix or something. Not salsa. Spicy V8 maybe?
Finally, all of the tables in the lobby were dirty. The table we chose had just been used, but was still the least dirty of all the tables. They seemed a bit short staffed. The open kitchen design allows you to watch and listen to all the silly conversations teenage fast food workers have. I don't really complain about the inappropriate stuff they say because well, they're teenagers.
I don't know what this place is or why people like it, the drive thru seemed busy, but the lobby was empty with the exception of a few people. No need for the management in charge of Yelp reviews to respond, this place just isn't for me, nor do I see how it could be for anyone except people with palates of children or people immune to sodium and calories. I'd rather just go to Taco Bell or something for fast food Mexican. The definition of one star on Yelp is "Eek, me thinks not!" and that's how I felt the moment I took my first bite...
Read moreFor a fast food chain, taco time is pretty good. This store appears to be clean, the bathrooms, the few times I have used them look to be tidy. The parking lot seems to be clean and not full of litter as well. I feel it is decent moderately priced food. I have only ever eaten at Taco Time around lunch hour, so I am unable to give any opinion about service or food quality during rush hour or dinner hour. I would say the Taco Time employees are friendly and personable. As far as menu, I usually have a few choices that I stay with, Soft mini taco, add onions and MINUS the ranch dressing I don't get having the ranch dressing on a soft taco or any taco. If I want a burrito, I usually do a child's meal so I can get a mini soft been or beef burrito that is light on cheese and add some onion and then toss out any other food (other than the drink) that may come with it. I have tried their white chicken chili, and for a mild fast-food chili it's pretty decent in taste. My all-time favorite that I "rarely" eat is crisp bean of beef burrito, what's not to love about deep fry and that's precisely why I shy away, but it is so good. I have had the sides of rice and the sides of beans, which are yummy. I've also had their Taco salad a few times, light on cheese add onion; I would rate it as being OK, I feel like the mixture is lacking something every time though. And I have even had their fit-bowls, it's probably one of the healthiest items at Taco Time, which is why I tend to go back to them; I would have preferred having lettuce with my fit bowl, again I feel as though the fit-bowls are lacking something, probably the lettuce IMO. Overall I will periodically return...
