Los Dos Compadres Cantina – Washougal: Mediocre Mexican With a Side of Hype Slightly better than my first (and last) visit shortly after moving to Washougal in 2017, but that’s not saying much. I came for lunch and sat at the bar—because the dining room was inexplicably packed. After this visit, I’m still scratching my head as to why. Let’s start with the drinks: $9 for a Happy Hour margarita? Really? It was weak, flavorless, and honestly one of the worst I’ve ever had. If there was tequila in there, it must have taken a wrong turn. The complimentary chips and salsa were decent, and the $5 side of guacamole wasn’t bad, but the portion was laughably small for the price. More like a garnish than a side. I went with the Taco and (2) Enchilada Combo ($15). Price was fair, but the execution? Not so much. The taco came in a prefab shell thinner than a paper napkin—completely incapable of holding its shredded beef filling. I had to inhale it before it disintegrated. The cheese and onion enchiladas were average at best, drowning in a watery sauce that clearly missed its thickening agent. What baffles me most are the glowing 5-star reviews. Some folks are calling this the “best Mexican food” they’ve ever had. Really? If this is the best you’ve had, I don’t want to imagine the worst. Taco Bell must be Michelin-starred in your book. I come to this review with photos of the menu! I called this place to order dinner from and asked if they had their menu online and they don't, so i decided to drop by to place my order and also take a chance to take a picture of their menu for everyone else looking! This place is pretty pricey, I got enchiladas rojas, and my partner got shrimp enchiladas, and we additionally got 2 Cadillac margaritas to go. The order total was like $77.The food was really good though, and I definitely see myself eating from this place again. My food ordering experience was not very pleasant, when you walk in there's a register behind two plexiglass windows, if you want to be served make sure you stand in front of the window that is not closest to the door. I waited for someone to get to the register so I could place my order, but a huge table of 6 got up to pay their tabs at the register as well and lined up on the other window. When someone finally attended the register they processed everyone else first before me. Barely even acknowledging me until the whole line was done, and then I moved to the other window. Pretty poor customer service right there, so I'm dropping my review by a star. If/when I go back and service still sucks I'll drop it another star, but for now I really enjoyed the food.

If you are looking for "Americanized" Mexican food; this is a good fit. The meat portions always have great flavor. Lots of cheese on everything, typically tex-mex flavor, huge portions, perfectly bland refried pinto beans... Oh.. And watery "salsa"... Some of their dishes are more traditional, but I can't get past the liquid salsa. I literally poured 2 bowls onto my nachos trying to get more flavor and heat on my nachos. Yes, I poured it like water. The food is good and reasonably price. We do eat here pretty often, but it's only because it's close and the service is EXCELLENT! great staff... Still, if you want authentic Mexican, this not your place.

Overall, I really love this restaurant. The food is consistently delicious. The only reason I’m doing 3 stars instead of 5 is their RIDICULOUS policies on refills. First off, they actually have a limit of fountain soda refills. I’ve never been to a restaurant where they limit fountain soda refills! One problem with this policy is that they fill the glasses mostly with ice, (even when you ask them to go light on ice). We have all stopped ordering soda from them, so that’s anywhere from $8-16 bucks a ticket they could be making if they hadn’t annoyed me. If that’s how they want to be, they can just keep bringing us unlimited refills of water!

Second, they limit you to one chip refill per table. When I’ve gone with a group of 2 or a group of 5, they gave us one bowl of chips each time and limited us to one refill in both scenarios! How does that make sense? Also, they’ll come take your chips to refill before you’ve finished them. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, but if you’re going to nickel and dime people over their chip refills, then you better let them have ALL their chips from each bowl!! To make matters worse, even when I’ve ordered appetizers that require chips (like the guac or the cheese dip), they still limited chip refills!? For that reason alone, I also stopped ordering appetizers, so that’s even more money they’re losing with these policies.

I cannot figure out why a business would risk annoying their patrons over the cheapest items in the restaurant! Also, if you’re going to have stupid policies like these, you should enforce them based upon number of people, or number of menu items ordered. That would obviously be a nightmare to calculate that out, which is exactly why it’s a stupid policy to begin with!

I would strongly encourage the owner/manager to reconsider these ridiculous and arbitrary policies and stop annoying your patrons. If that ever happens I will be the first to edit my review and give them the 5 stars they would otherwise...
