If ya know me, you'll be surprised that I tried a Jersey Mike's Sub. My families roots are in South Philly, we moved right over the bridge in the early 1970s to South Jersey, but I still frequent Philadelphia. We call Subs a Hoagie, and we make a compelling argument. I'll post the story below this review. I don't visit many chain restaurants because the local establishments in my local area are always far superior. I kept seeing the commercials with my Italian brother Danny Devito, and I trust Danny, so today I decided to give J.M.'s a try. Service and employees. 5 stars, these guys almost hit Chick-fil-A friendliness level! Cleanliness and appearance. 3 stars, not dirty but not spotless. I ate at the location. It was just "okay" as far as comfortable seating goes. The "Sub" 3 stars. First, let me say if I'm ever far from home and I'm craving a Hoagie and my only choice was a Wawa or a Jersey Mike's, I would 100% pick a Jersey Mike's I had tried Subway a long, long time ago, and in my opinion, Subway is awful beyond words, and I'm amazed they exist in Philadelphia or New Jersey. I had a Jersey Mike's Original, which is basically an Italian Hoagie. I asked them to hold the peperoni because I've never had a Hoagie with peperoni, and I didn't want the peperoni to affect my comparison and judgment as to what I personally enjoy about a Hoagie. The employee offered to add 1 slice of each meat since I didn't want peperoni. That was very thoughtful of him, and I accepted his offer. The taste wasn't bad at all, the meat was sliced to order, and the toppings were fresh. Look, if I lived in Alabama and never had a real Philadelphia Hoagie, Jersey Mike's would have received 5 stars. In my opinion, what Jersey Mike's could do that would make me enjoy their Sub would be, #1 If you have a location in the Northeast, then get the bread from a local bakery such as Liscio's. Even if it's an option to their store made bread. I understand because it's a chain. Every location has to be exactly the same, so that suggestion won't work. I'm not saying the roll was bad, but for me, it didn't have the slight crunch of a roll from a good bakery. #2 Don't cut the rolls completely in half. Cutting them completely in half makes for a messy Hoagie. I never had a Hoagie with the roll cut completely in half. It was a little bit of a fight to keep the ingredients in between the bread. I get defensive when I see restaurants that use the word Philly, Philadelphia, or Jersey in their names, especially if they are located in a state that's not PA. or NJ, but I think that Jersey Mike's does a good enough job representing the basics of a good Hoagie, so I give them my blessings to bare the word "Jersey" in their name.
One legend of the origin of the hoagie sandwich is tied to Hog Island. Domenic Vitiello, professor of Urban Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, asserts that Italians working on Hog Island in the old Navy Yard introduced the sandwich, by putting various meat, cheese, and lettuce between two slices of bread. This became known as the "Hog Island" sandwich; hence,...
Read moreTo say I am pleased with my experience here is a complete understatement. To start, the staff welcomed me with a friendly hello and kind wave. They then allowed me a second to look over the menu and gather my thoughts of what I planned on ordering which is perfect because I didn’t feel rushed one bit. Once I was ready to order, Mike, began slicing my sandwich with a swiftness but also care to not make a mess. I ordered a mini on the rosemary parmesan bread with american and provolone cheese, however they have a variety of selections for vegetarians that I will definitely try in the future, given the excellent service I received. Since it was my first time, I was unaware of some of the toppings which Shawn, happily answered and made my sandwich exactly how I wanted it and even sparked a conversation with me while making it. He recommended the pepper relish and I will definitely be getting it every time from now on! Finally, John, the owner, introduced himself to me, completed my order and welcomed me to enjoy a seat and refreshment. I definitely get the impression that he truly cares about the store as a whole including the staff and customers, which is refreshing to see. I really enjoyed the layout of the store and ambience as well which was a relaxing start to my day as I am a late riser. I really enjoyed the music playlist they had on too, I was tapping my foot as some of my favorites played while I enjoyed my sandwich. During my time there, the staff handled every customer with the same nature as me which I took notice of. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here and is a must try for anyone looking for a great...
Read moreI've been here more than a dozen times and have to say; this is the best place in town for subs. Everything is reasonably priced, the food is great, you can taste the freshness in the ingredients, and its location is perfect. Aside from all the, the true trophy that this place has is the Operating Partner (i think he is the manager of the store as well), Ryan Pace. Ryan is always happy to see a customer come in and does an amazing job at making you feel comfortable and excited about your experience. My gf and I literally only go in if we see him working. He makes quality subs filled with meat (there is never an issue of not enough in the sub). Ryan is surely the driving force behind the success at jersey mikes and his efforts alone have caused me to be an advocate and life-long...
