Came in around 7 o'clock on a Tuesday night. The cafe was quiet and David Chang's "Ugly Delucious" was being projected on the wall. We sat at the bar and ordered a beer. They have four different canned options as well as a pilsner on draft (13oz $7 Or shot and a 8 oz beer $5). Service was prompt and friendly and we decided some fried chicken skin and two Banh Mi (Available in Chicken, Pork, Beef or Veg $7/+$2 for fried egg). It was insane, ingredients where fresh and made to order, the French baguette was perfectly soft and crunchy. The chicken skins did not disappoint either. Salty and crunchy, they were drisseled with a sweet sauce to balance out the dish. We moved on to dessert ordering the Bahn la Dua (Pandan Brioche with Coconut Jam) and a Bahn Kem Dua (Bun filled with cold coconut cream and jam). I underestimated how big the Bahn La Dua would be and probably could have shared it after the Banh Mi but we were resilient and persevered. Overall, Great Friendly service, Delicious food served late and a casual quiet atmosphere make this an amazing addition to the HaiSous family and to The Pilsen neighbourhood. I look forward to coming here again soon to satisfy a late night Vietnamese craving, try a coffee or or imbibe...
Read moreOut of my three day foodie trip to Chicago, Ca Phe Da was the BEST place I dined. Staying in the neighborhood of Pilsen, I wandered in on a Tuesday afternoon around 4pm for a very late lunch. Despite an empty restaurant, I had a stellar experience and I cannot wait to go back. Here's why:
Atmosphere: It's beautifully designed. Once you walk in, it's set up like a fancy, yet still approachable diner with small tables and a long bar with bar stools. The art on the walls fit the style. If you're into Instagram, the large "cocktail" sign looks great on the gram.
Food: Even if the atmosphere was off, the food alone would give it a 5-star rating. The banh mi sandwich with a fried egg on top is really, really good. For dessert, order the brioche with coconut jam.
Cocktail: Their drinks are on point. I ordered the whiskey cocktail and the bartender made it sweet just the way I like it.
Neighborhood: It's in the heart of Pilsen, an emerging art neighborhood, and now a foodie neighborhood thanks to Ca Phe Da.
If you like neo-Vietnamese food, definitely add Ca Phe Da...
Read morePreface: My wife and I used to come here 5 years ago. Its a bit different now since it was temporarilly closed during covid until very recently (just opened again a month or 2 ago) The menu on google isn't entirely accurate; it lists some stuff from the previous menu that is not yet available.
The Pho 6/5 : best Pho I've had, and I've been to a plethora of pho places. Portion is larger than it looks
The egg custard coffee 4/5 : its different than it was years ago. This egg custard is very light and fluffy, more like an egg foam. The original vanilla egg custard with coffee was 6/5 i.m.h.o
The chicken sandwich 4/5 : the first bite is 5/5 but since the flavor is strong, it becomes overpowering after eating the whole thing
Lychee Danish 5/5 would recommend
Vibes : 5/5
Price-Quality Ratio 5/5
I've heard more things from the old menu will be coming back; fingers crossed the previous style "vanilla egg...
