We used to come here a few times a year and never had any problems with the service and the food was decent. This time though was quite disappointing. The waitress was friendly enough but didn't even greet us or tell us her name at first she just asked if we were ready to order yet... our food came all at different times. I ordered steak with eggs, hashbrowns and toast. My steak came by itself in a puddle of greasy liquid along with someone else Philly cheesesteak order. Then about 6 minutes later another person's order came and then rest of my meal that goes with my steak (hashbrowns, eggs, toast) The waitress walked away before we could even request anything Or observed anything missing. Our drinks were never refilled and she never looked our way the whole visit we had to look for her; it took me five more minutes after I got my food to get the butter and jelly for my toast. Since I couldn't find her I had to use the wrapped utensils napkins from nearby empty tables because she didn't bring us any extra napkins or ask us if we needed anything else. Not to mention the waitresses seem to have a little huddle argument speaking inappropriately as I had three young girls with me the conversation was clear and should not have taken place where customers can hear in front of everyone especially with my little girls with me. As I proceeded to pay the cashier I said hello he stared at me and grabbed my card ...no thank you or smiles not from the waitress standing right there even though I still tipped (that was dumb of me )not even from the cashier and really quite disappointing because we used to love coming Here for the friendly atmosphere and service but obviously there's been a change of management or a lack of something ...White Palace Grill is definitely not one of my recommendations any longer. At this point we would've been more satisfied going to Dunkins donuts across the street . I can say that the food actually was not bad but when you don't get good service no matter how good the food is it will leave a bad taste...
Read moreAfter living in Chicago for years and driving past this place 100s of times I finally decided to stop in as I've been trying to eat breakfast more recently.
I noticed the owner / owners sitting at the counter as I walked in watching over the operation. Hi guys, hope your reading this review...
I ordered a breakfast sandwich to go. Eggs sausage and cheese on a french roll $14.09 w/tax for the sandwich.
For that price I got a roll that was probably a day old (certainly not stale, but not a piece of freshly baked artisanal bread.) Precooked/frozen sausage patties that were meh and fresh eggs that were expertly made over easy (my compliments on that egg cook job!)
It was made quickly (about 5 minutes), and I got back on the road... But this was not a $14.00 sandwich. Let's say the roll cost $1.00 and the 3 x frozen pre cooked sausage patties cost $0.75 ea. 3 x eggs @ $0.25ea $0.25 for the cheese (for which I was charged $1.00 extra). So that's $4.25 let's call it $5.00 with tax. I can see a markup of 2 x which comes out to $10.00 out the door (even that would be high for this sandwich but inflation is a beast) , but almost 3 x markup?
If the sandwich was like artisan out of this world... Maybe with a hollandaise sauce on it and some chives with freshly cooked sausages on a sourdough garlic roll that had been delivered that morning and a possibly some ramps... Ok that would be worth $15.00.
But this sandwich... Common guy... At least toast the bread my man.
There is no parking so you have to pay for a meter or risk getting towed from the Whole Foods lot. I parked illegally out front with my hazards on since I only stopped in for the pickup.
The staff was lovely, the owner is greedy...
Check out the Spoke & Bird over on 18th about the same price and the food is twice is as good.

Read moreWOW! Just WOW! I have been wanting to come here for YEARS! Did I say years?!?! Yes, years. I saw an episode of Diners, Drive-In, and Dives many years ago with my husband and I told him that I wanted us to go. Today was that day! After our annual trip to the Chicago Auto Show, we walked out starving! He suggested another "white building" establishment and at first, I didn't mind, but then I realized where we were and asked him if we weren't far from there. He was just thinking the same thing and off we went with our daughter in tow to try it all together for the first time.
All I can say is that it's worth all the hype and more! We felt welcomed the moment we walked in the door. We sat in a booth and had enough time to look over this huge menu.. and BTW, breakfast is served all day!... I picked the corned beef hash with eggs & toast, the hubby got the patty melt and our daughter got biscuits & gravy.
We didn't hear a peep from our daughter for almost 15 minutes as she enjoyed her biscuits & gravy... something that says a lot about the way that the food is made!
Our other two meals were just as good as I hoped that they would be. And I am so happy that it was.
Our waitress made the whole experience even better as she made it seem like we were at her home. And when we checked out, the lady that checked us out even suggested what to try the next time we come - not if we come back, when we come back. That seriously topped out our night there.
Whenever in the South Loop/UIC area, make sure to hit up this place. You'll walk out of there with a full...
