La Catrina Restaurant — Restaurant in West Haven

I have been coming here for a year, the food is decent and the place is kept very clean! Nobody’s perfect, three things happened that made me decide to stop coming here. A while back I noticed that they had hotdog torta on the menu, when I got it the hotdogs were pretty much raw, maybe they were on the grill for 30 seconds, I returned it and they brought me one that had cooked hotdogs, I was great at that point! The second thing that happened that I did not like was, the menu has very little English description of the meals, the servers don’t always explain things properly, I ended up with a dish that can only be described as cartilage soup, I ate some of it I did not like it, I told them I did not like it and although I did not expect them to take it off the Bill they didn’t even offer. The last and final thing that happened, I had ordered the delicious blackened fish tacos special and three Carnitas tacos, I ate the fish tacos, then the Carnitas tacos came out, I’m not sure what it was but it was not Carnita, I ate one taco while trying to figure out if it was just bad quality Carnita or not Carnita at all. I asked the bartender what happened and she said that she put an order in for Carnita, she then went in the back and they then brought out TWO Carnita tacos, once I saw that I realize that they were going to charge me for that one taco that I ate to try to decipher exactly what I was eating, I explain to the manager Karen that I thought that as a restaurant owner she was being petty and cheap, they were going to charge me for their mistake, they were going to charge me for that one taco that I ate ! I asked for the bill and when they brought it to me they were delighted to inform me that they were only charging me for two Carnita tacos! I used to go there every week and spend between 60 and $100, I think Karen should add up all the weeks she’s not gonna get that in the future for me. I found a nice little place in Westville that just opened, been there twice and I’m very happy with the service and the food is exceptional,...

I don't leave reviews often, but this place blew me away so much I HAD to take the time. It was my 2nd visit, I had been before when they first opened and definitely noted how good the food was, so when my out of town friends suggested mexican I reccomended we go here.

First off, we went on a Monday and they were OPEN and had taco specials! We were a party of 5 and ordered 5 different entrees including some tacos, drinks, a bottle of wine and dessert. Just WOW! Tacos, amazing. The new york strip mexican style, amazing. Gulf shrimp quesidilla, amazing. The wine was a reasonable price at $30 a bottle, we took a chance at the prayers for sinners and it was Amazing. Not too dry, not too sweet. It was perfect with the dishes. We were so stuffed but decided to share a few of the fried cheesecake and we thought we were in heaven.

Decor, ambiance, music and food were all spot on. But the service is where things went from a very good restaurant to TOP NOTCH. The hostess and the server couldn't do enough for our very casual group. Noticing our great time, they sent us complimentary mezcal shots which was SO nice of them. Every1 in the service industry makes small talk but you can tell they actually listened and genuinely cared going out of their way to make our friend reunion a true great memory.

03/09/2025. LaCatrina hits it out of the park AGAIN! Good food, good drinks, nice atmosphere, and attentive waitresses - what more could you ask for. Had steak enchiladas w green sauce. Nicely done.. wife had shrimp fajitas and came on a hot plate, sizzling. Excellent! A definite recommended place. 11/4/22. La Catrina hits it out of the park again! This place never fails to deliver a good meal at a decent price. I had a seafood soup.. LOADED with shrimp, mussels, clams calamari and octopus. Soup had some heat to it, although I did spice it up more with supplied red pepper flakes.. OUTSTANDING! CLEAN AND FRESH! Wife had her usual.. shrimp fajitas. Again, excellent.

07/23/2022 - La Catrina always delivers. This week, had nachos, enchiladas and a steak taco, wife had shrimp fajitas. Once again, food was excellent, service was great. Five stars!

06/18/22- STILL EXCELLENT. Service was good- food was excellent. Dining room was not busy- bar area appeared hopping!
