Updates: Upped to 4 stars April 2022 Upped to 2 stars October 2021 Original 1 star review submitted June 2021

You may ask yourself why would someone keep going to place they gave one star to. The sushi here is outstanding, easily 5 stars for the value. Everything else went from acceptable from before the pandemic to horrible post pandemic (if we can even say that). I and my friends used to frequent Masa all the time before they reopened to the public and were very disappointed by the condition for some time. There were many negatives that have mostly been corrected as of April 2022. Revisions to my original review are marked below with 3 stars.

New Order System

  • All the concerns below with the new order system still apply They implemented a new E ordering option from the table but it's pretty convoluted It absolutely requires some explanation your first go round on it which I noticed they don’t do when it’s busy You are paying and deciding tip ahead of time which feels bizarre You only use this on your first order, subsequent orders need to be given verbally so you don’t get double billed They need to retool this so you don’t pay up front and can use it for all orders, not just the first. This would reduce burden on the servers and confusion with patrons.

Staffing

  • All the staffing issues seem to be substantially improved This is probably the weakest part of the entire setup They have usually up to 3 staff members running around between the front register, take out menu, taking orders, serving drinks and food. For all I know they disappear into the kitchen to help too! They desperately need more headcount work with dedicated roles. Someone should be at the front at all times as there always people waiting, picking up orders, having questions / issues, meanwhile the person that should be at the register has to wipe down tables or get food, etc. As busy as this place is they need a manager on the floor coordinating / pointing out tables that have been waiting awhile for something etc The sushi chefs themselves seem to be able to keep up with the demand I can’t help but feel that ownership is being cheap about staff, though this will hurt their business in the long run The staff themselves are trying their best

Order Accuracy Issues

  • Update: Order accuracy seems to have improved significantly during less busy times Items from our orders are always missing something and leave you in a state of limbo wondering if it’s delayed or lost Had to ask multiple times for drinks, soy sauce and missing food Servers were taking long orders from memory or writing them on their arms

Other They use paper plates and cups Given wait times are grossly underestimated, adding to frustration levels A portion of the restaurant had seating converted for takeout prep space during the pandemic and seems wasteful now (I did not see it in use) *Update: This has been converted back to a normal dining area again

I have no idea if ownership has been looking at feedback like this but I am super happy to see things improve. I hope they keep it up because me and my friends...

Five stars before three months ago............. Down hill from there.............. For the past two to three years I have eaten at this place at least once a month. I cannot put into words how great it used to be. However, over the past few months there has been a change in wait staff and change in their tactics towards serving additional rolls that were never ordered, or putting big gobs of rice under sashimi that never had rice under it before. The past three times that I have been there, when three or more rolls have been ordered at one time there will be at least one and tonight two additional rolls that were not ordered, on top of what was actually ordered, which me and my girlfriend would never order. Knowing fare well that they will charge you an additional charge for not eating everything that you are served, my girlfriend and I are very particular about what we order and when, but when they give you an additional 12 to 16 pieces of something that you know you don't like in the first place it prevents you from getting the things you truly enjoy. The quality of their wait staff has declined over the past few months as well, when arriving later in the night they will not attend to you knowing that the less they attend to you the less product they will use. Not only that, they have become more and more rude. The new waiter Chris who is new enough that the chefs called him by a different name copped an attitude with the chefs, and also with the customers. When the fact that we were served more than we ordered was brought up, several times he got a sarcastic attitude with us saying "youre not hungry tonight?" and "i saw how much you ordered, im glad you ate all of it tonight" when we left two pieces of the unordered roll. this is one loyal...
