We went to Penang in Princeton for my birthday on Feb 15th, 2015. It was worth driving thru the snow blizzard. I had lived in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. I was so pleasantly surprised to taste the authenticity of the dishes at Penanag Malaysian & Thai Cuisine. I've had Nasi Lamak and it was spot on. We've had Malaysian fried rice and Thai Red curry, Thai Basil beef as well as Seafood Tom Yum and Thai Bubble Tea. Each and every dish were perfectly spiced and cooked. I recommend this place to everyone starting from people who are familiar with authentic Asian food as well as people who just having it for the very first time. The decor was very soothing and had great Asian elements incorporated into it. The service was amazing. Each of the staff were very friendly and had beautiful smiles across. I love this place and i loved the food which i was searching for in New Jersey having spent almost eight years in South East Asia. I found it and im ecstatic. I will drive for an hour to get to this place when i need to be reminded of the beautiful memories i've experienced in Asia.
I have also read other reviews who have criticized this place. Let me tell you, if you want flowers on the table pls go to a resort. Tell me honestly, even the American restaurants do not want bloody flowers on the table. What i had learned being in Asia is that simplicity that makes it rich. I like the raw hawker center, off the road to Penang from KL kinda look.
As for price tags, we've ordered so much food for a table of five. We were expecting over $130 but it was under $100. So i dont know what people are giving the price tag a bad review for? If you want cheap, pls go to Burger King, dont come for exotic food experience.
Going into a Malaysian restaurant, asking to be serviced by staff fluent in English is stupidly ignorant. You want authentic food, go with authentic all around, even in the atmosphere. I absolutely hate going into so called Asian restaurants and greeted by staff who have American accent. Where's the piece of Asia in that? I go to an Asian restaurant, i prepare myself for asian speaking staff....
Read moreI'm sorry but this place is a disgrace as a restaurant. If you're lucky you will get a new plate, and/or new utensils, otherwise you'll get a plate that's probably 10 years old scratched and turned color. Mine happened to have slight green on the inner rim of the plate. The forks and spoons are very scratched up and dull looking. The bowl that was given for soup and dried up rice stuck on the inside. I was seated at a big round table as a party of 8. The table was waxy/sticky/oily. I couldn't even put my hands on it. The plate would literally stick to the table unable to slide. They didn't even provide a lazy susan (center spinner). We had to stand up to grab/pass something to the otherside, it was unbelievable. The food was ok and not something ecstatic. The prices are not listed and says "prices are not up to date" on the cover of the menu. So they can basically list any price they want. The service was non existent. It wasn't even busy, they never came by to refill water once. We ordered soup, they never served it, I had to stand up to fill up the bowls myself. At the end of the meals they asked "was everything ok". Seriously? After we finished, you decide to come ask? They were hoping for us to order desserts or fruits that's when they kept coming to us. When we got the bill, gratuity was added into the bill already. Besides cooking of the food, placing it on the table what else did they...
Read moreThis was an awesome experience! Don’t be fooled by the name change, this resteraunt still serves most of the same dishes that Penang used to except, in my opinion, does it even better! The service is even better than before (everyone there is super nice and efficient) and the food is so flavorful.
We ordered the roti kanai (a family favorite), another roti dish with egg and onion in it, a vegetable oyster garlic sauce dish, drunken noodles (otherwise called the thai basil chicken noodles), and tofu w seafood soup! The soup had such a beautiful ginger flavor and did wonders in this cold weather- not to meantion the tofu and seafood included were cooked to supreme tenderness and all worked together in harmony. Every other dish was great as well, the roti kanai was crispy and soft at the same time while the curry it was served alongside had the right amount of spice and umami. Additionally, the vegetable dish and drunken noodles were delicious (ask for some chili oil on the side if you like extra spice).
To finish it off we got the thai ice tea and pineapple upside down cake! They were both perfect (not overly sweet and served at the right temperatures)! Highly recommend...
