This review is in response to Tadwick F 's review in a previous post... Years ago I moved to Wichita and kept trying to find a good BBQ.. I came across When Pigs Fly one evening with my family. To be honest I was already skeptical because of all the other establishments that have electric smoke ovens just don't taste the same as good BBQ.. To be honest when I first walked in being a bit sour already I went ahead and asked " Can you please tell me .. is this another one of those electric smoke shops with low quality meat... I don't mind paying the prices (average price for bbq) but I won't feed my family BBQ from another electric "call them self a bbq joint" place? " About that time a man from in the kitchen walked out and said " HI, I'm Brian is there something maybe I could help you with?" I told him the story and he said" Well I tell ya what.. I'll just give you a "sample plate" and let me know what you think and when you're done if you'd like to see my smoker, I'll take you outside personally and show it to you"
So the sample plate came out to me.."MR. PICKY" and I tried it... Needless to say after trying his BBQ I LOVED IT.. also the Sample plate was loaded with over 1 lb of fresh smoked meats.. in a variety of every meat they sell!!! My entire family was able to sample more than enough meat and everyone loved it!!! That day I ordered my first meal from When Pigs Fly... The quality that day was perfect. the meat's were all warm.. and the sides were all adequate temperatures for what we ordered. Brian treated us like a VERY VALUED CUSTOMER and had never met me or my family before.. Was a perfect experience...
I'd like to also note that since then... our entire family agrees this is the best BBQ in Wichita and When Pigs Fly BBQ is the only establishment we frequent. Our family lives in Derby, KS which is some 16.1 miles or 22 minutes away from our home but we still go back at least once per month because we're hooked on the best BBQ place to eat in Wichita. I do want to mention in relation to Tadwick F's comment I have been greeted with "Bud" before but in my knowledge of terminology "bud" was used as a way to 1. Greet others and 2. Is defined as "Friend" so this sure beats the heck out of no greeting or being greeted with " What do you want" .. I do see where someone might appreciate "Sir" more but if I have to go to a place with a psychology degree to eat .. it's not for me.. and no matter how we look at it there will be people everywhere that will try to destroy a good thing.. (Please see my attached photos as this individual has very little good to say about anywhere..)
So in closing I'd have to admit that Tadwick F is correct.. he was greeted by staff.. and if he ordered potato salad I'd bet it was served cold as well as their wonderful sweet tea.. and I've never seen any hostility in this joint so would hope anyone that loves a genuinely good BBQ that falls off the bone and brisket that you can pull apart with a fork.. would go try this place with honest people.. a good portion size and quality that beats the rest by 2 times over... and would highly advise Tadwick F to give this place another try if it happened to be an off day or something.. If When Pigs Fly BBQ ever lets anyone down.. ( and not sure how this is possible) .. it won't let him down again.. because I can "honestly say" this place is well ran and has never let me and my family down. Brian and Kendra I'd like to remind you that you're doing an excellent job and for an owner of a business to stop all progress on orders to come greet a customer "bud or not" and allow any random stranger to have a free large portion of meat to demo.. because of one "picky customer" I applaud you both!! Congratulations on "The most favored place my family wants to eat...
Read moreThe only BBQ joint worthwhile in Wichita! My husband and I are foodies, if it doesnât smell good look good or taste good most likely, we are not eating your food! We were checking out places to eat in Wichita for overnight stay. My husband was researching all of them and looking at their reviews. He kept going back-and-forth between two places and found a review that said this is the place! When pigs fly! When we walked through the door, not only could you smell all the aromas from all the meats being cooked, but you got the sense of walking into a family establishment. The people were fantastic! They donât serve up a tasting platter, however, the owner had the kitchen staff put a few pieces of each meat on a plate for us to try. We were sold!! We ordered the family pack and got a half rack of ribs on the side with that, hence the amount we spent LOL. We got the ribs, the brisket, the brown sugar glazed ham, and the jalapeño cheddar sausage. Our sides were the macaroni salad, and the baked beans. We ate until we couldnât eat anymore and we still had food left over to take home! The sweet tea is so good, it would make any southerner proud to drink it! if you donât at least give them a try, you are missing out on the best barbecue joint we have found between four states so far! They do catering for big and small events, their plates and servings are plentiful, again the people are fantastic, and the owner, you wouldnât even know he was the owner. He is humble, he is jovial, and the rest of his staff absolutely adore him, and adore working with him. Not only are we leaving with full bellies, we are leaving with leftovers that are to die for, and in great spirits for having enjoyed eating here. Thank you for serving us, we will be back!! be the early bird and get good servings. If you come later in the day there is a higher chance of them running out of stuff. As it would be in any great food establishment. The meat by itself with the smoke flavor, and the spices that they use are phenomenal, even without their house made sauces! For us, when it comes to bark on smoked meats, we donât like a whole lot of bark. So for us, the amount of seasonings and bark that was on the food was perfect! We donât typically give out five star ratings, unless the establishment is well deserving. When pigs fly is definitely worthy of a five star rating in...
Read moreThe husband and I went out for dinner, a new place. A quiet, and calm atmosphere. The lady behind the counter, Laurie (sp) was super pleasant and cheerful and smiley. We ordered our food, which I ordered the 2 meat dinner ( brisket and ham) with 2 sides ( garlic green beans and macaroni salad) along with white bread. Oh my goodness, the garlic green beans are absolutely delicious. The brisket just fell apart and was to. Die. For. !! The ham was also a wonderful bite of food, I have to say though, the macaroni salad threw me for a loop. It was definitely not like the normal Mac salad I've always tasted, and I'm super thankful for that. It was creamy and not sweet like normal Mac salads are, this one I absolutely enjoyed every last bite. My husband ordered the "bulldozer" sandwich which consisted of brisket/hot links/ as well as turkey. As well as 2 sides ( garlic green beans and coleslaw) my fiance is absolutely serious about his coleslaw. So much to my happiness, he finished every last spec of coleslaw...whaaaat.... . He decided that his food was absolutely amazing đ. With everything completely different from what we are used to, but so much better in other ways. He loved that the cook came over and checked on our dining experience, and the lovely lady behind the counter was walking around checking on people when she got a few free moments from taking orders. This place is an absolute gem, and so so good. I HIGHLY recommend. Y'all run to this spot on your next date night or...
