Title: Anita’s Cocina: From Destination to Disappointment Since 2016, I’ve driven from Phoenix to Wickenburg just for Anita’s Cocina. The food was worth the miles, and I happily supported them through menu changes and rising prices. But my last visit will be my last. The first thing I was told? Chips and salsa are no longer free. Now it’s $10 for the same small bowl they used to serve for free — with just one refill. That’s not hospitality, that’s a cover charge in disguise. There’s maybe $2 worth of chips and salsa in that bowl. The only real difference now is the extra $8 on the bill and the bad taste it leaves — and I’m not talking about the food. It’s clear they won’t go back to free chips. Why would they? They’re the only Mexican restaurant in Wickenburg. But just because customers have few options doesn’t mean they should feel taken for granted. Anita’s, you’ve gone from being a must-visit to a “never again.” I’ll take my appetite — and my $10 — back to Phoenix, where the chips are still free and the loyalty goes both ways. Charging $10 for chips and salsa is like charging for the fork — yes, I could pay it, but why would I?

Rolling around the some 47 or so roundabouts into Wickenburg, I pulled up to Anita’s Cocina and let me tell ya, this place is straight up a hacienda of flavor. My server Linda’s five star service brought me to the first course, the house margarita. One sip and boom! perfect balance of tart lime and smooth tequila that hits like a the southwest sunshine. Refreshing, bold, and just the right kick to get the party started. The chips and salsa was of course a mandatory try. Crispy, warm chips with that perfect crunch, diving into fresh, zesty hot and mild salsas that got layers of flavor and just the right pop of heat. You know its good when you can’t stop dipping. Then the fish taco dinner came in hot, grilled to perfection on the outside, tender, moist and flaky on the inside. Wrapped up with fresh toppings that bring the crunch, creaminess, and a squeeze of pico that ties the whole ride together. Every bite was Mexican comfort food especially with the fresh made refried beans. Friendly staff, quiet atmosphere, and great food. If you’re cruising through Wickenburg, Anita’s Cocina is a must stop on the map.

First thing when you walk thru the door is trump posters and flags everywhere. While I’m not political and def preferred trump over Kamala, when it comes to Mexican food, that’s probably a red flag. Speaking of flags, there were more American flags than Mexican flags. Actually I don’t think I saw a single Mexican flag. Or even a Mexican employee or customer. The food wasn’t authentic. They added sugar to their pork tamales. What the heck? That doesn’t make sense for the masa to taste like cornbread desert! Also no flavor to any of the foods or salsa. Prices were average so can’t bash it that much. Just one of the weirdest Mexican restaurants ive been to. And I’ve been to over 500 in about 40 different states. Also they love putting lettuce and black olives on everything. Idk why they call it authentic. Call it something else and brand it another way

In general, disappointed. First would like to point out that I do not typically submit reviews of any sort let alone long reviews but I feel I had to in this case about this visit to Anita's. We'd heard good things about Anita's and many area locals we spoke to recommended it so we were hopeful. We were seated quickly which was nice at a booth which we prefer. In the section near the restrooms. Soon after we were seated a group was escorted into our area but not seated and stood near our table talking loudly to the other patrons in this section. The staff seemed to know them as hugs from them were given and the standing group proceeded to visit for a while. It made it difficult for my husband and I to have a conversation with each other. We were relieved when they dispersed after about 5 minutes of chatting. As far as the food goes? The chips and salsa were the only thing we can say was good about the food other than it arrived quickly. I ordered the daily special which was sort of a taco casserole and my husband had a quesadilla. Most of the time daily specials are exactly that "special" and for a first time diner, are more often than not, a good way to go if you want to get a good idea of the quality of the food and talents of the cook/chef. There was absolutely nothing special about this special. About 2/3 of the plate was rice, a little bit of refried beans off to the side, small salad off to the side, and a smallish pile of what I assume was supposed to be the casserole. I ate 3 bites and stopped after that. The sauce tasted funny and nothing like you'd expect Mexican food taste. The ground beef tasted like it had been burned to the bottom of the pan. My husband said the same about his dish. There was just absolutely no flavor to any of the food on the plate. We were hungry so I ate most of the rice and my husband ate most of his quesadilla. We debated on whether or not we'd take any of the remaining food on our plates home with us and decided to go ahead and ask for a to go container. Just in case we wanted to try it again at home to see if we felt better about it later. When my husband scooped up my leftovers from my plate to place it into the container I saw what was a hair come with it. I pulled the end of the hair strand I could see and it was firmly embedded in the dish under the sauce and cheese. I had to tug quite hard to get it to come out of the food. It was a length and color of neither one of us, black color about 10 inches in length. In fact, my hair was tied in a bun so it would not have been even remotely possible for this strand to come from my head nor was it my color. We elected not to say anything about this hair encounter to the staff. The vibe we got when we arrived told us that if you are a local and know the owner you are given the red carpet treatment, so as first time visitors and not locals we felt uncomfortable enough we didn't want the kind of interaction with the staff that would draw too much attention to us. In a not so good way. We took our food, which we tossed later, paid our tab, and went on our merry way. Can't say...

wow I believe the waitress name was Amy not 100% sure. I can't believe what I witnessed how she treated a family with 3 kids. asked how the food was and they gave feedback that the food was not good. I heard her say if it tastes bad just poor salsa on it. then replied let me go taste the meat. she then came back and said it tastes good and gave them a bowl of meat like mocking them. and then did not go back to there table at all. I then changed my order from hamburger to chicken because I didnt want the same treatment as what they got. THEN SHE REFURED TO GIVE THEM THEIR BILL!!! so I thought oh thats nice they must be giv8ng them a huge discount I thought thats good. BUT NO that wa snot the case she never came back! they got up and went to the counter and asked if they can paynl their bill and the gal up there said didnt your waitress give you a bill they said no haven't seen her she then proceeds to go get the waitress and she comes back with a HUGE attitude. she then replies as me and my wife are spying and listening that the owners said to give you half off and she says but I am not going to honor it. they then say well we will just pay the half like the owners said and she came unglued and said no your not I am calling the COPS and leaves them standing there unable to pay there bill and refused to come back so they can pay!! they kept asking g to pay there bill she would not come out of the kitchen!! they were demanding that they wanted to pay the bill so they could leave (they had 3 kids) nope not happening. the wife asked some young kid to go get the waitress so they could pay the bill. She finally came out and wasn't gonna let them pay the bill and then proceed to say no.The owners are on their way and the cops! for what???? she was then harassing the youngest kid and the mom got mad and she had every right to be mad. they lady was playing games with the family and the bill was over a 100.00 I heard the waitress be snarky about the bill. and she kept checking her watch stalling for them to pay. absolutely ridiculous service and behavior this was my 1st and last time there. I feel bad for the family and what that crazy lady did. honestly I was wanting out of that place and then she had the nerve to come back to our table and talk crap about the family. my wife wanted to knock that waitresses teeth down her throat. I tell yah karma is hopefully coming for that waitress. I will be telling everyone at the roping and camp about this and them. My wife is already let...

I am sitting down appalled at what just took place at your establishment. My family and I have been coming to and adoring your place for 17 plus years. We treat our out of town guests to your place. We have raved and raved about you for years. I am broken hearted because of the treatment that I just received by your hostess today. I was honored to be bringing my best friend to her first time there. We placed our name on the list and specifically asked the younger hostess how long. She said 1/2 hour and I said we are walking around and came back in 20. Then an older hostess was there when we got back and I asked she immediately had an awful attitude stating they called our name 2. I began to speak, she cut me off and I proceeded say she told us 1/2 hour and was cut off again by said older hostess to not get snappy with her. I looked at my best friend with embarrassment and disbelief and said to this hostess twice that “no part of me was snapping at her”. Twice. And she began to try and tell me about her awful day the day before. This women embarrassed me, disrespected me and literally broke my heart because my beloved restaurant is now some place I will never go again and will sadly be telling my family how awful we were treated. I don’t care how bad of a day you have had nor how busy you are, you never treat a customer that way and it’s awful that I will Never come back. I don’t know if she was the owner, an employee or what but this was an awful experience and now a ton of business has been lost. I attempted to call and tell you this on the phone but it was as never ending my busy....
