I'll start with. I used to love this place. We are from Florida and we would make trips maybe every other year to Virginia. One year we discovered this place and it blew our mind. We had never had shaved ice with ice cream in the same cup. We went home to Florida on a quest to find this exact thing. We ended up finding it in our area where it had been all along. We found versions with shaved, ice and gelati. So thank you. Shoo fly for helping us discover our new favorite dessert.
With that said, the quality has decreased every time we have gone since the last two trips. The first sign of low quality was the ice was not being snowy. It had larger chunks and more icy (bad). I think this is because they changed the machine out. This was maybe 2 years ago when we noticed this. When we came this year. We were hoping, fingers crossed, the ice issues were resolved. It was a very cold day but it did not stop us and we found that the quality of ice had not changed. It was closer to snow cone quality rather than puffy snowy shaved ice. Not what we were used to at this place on our first visits.
I think the flavor choice is still solid. There are many things to choose from but on this last visit the syrup was lacking. There were some spots of my shaved ice which were just ice and no flavor. Really disappointed. The look is always great but the look can't make a...
Read moreThis is an excellent small family owned Ice cream place like those that used to dot virtually every small town. We actually found it on Google Maps heading by Williamsburg on interstate 64 one evening. It's about 5 minutes off with just one turn each way, no stop lights or traffic. Back is the same, east or west bound.
They have hundreds of different kinds and flavors of snow cones, plus other treats. But, my favorite is the soft serve. I must say that I have not had chocolate soft serve that good since I was a kid. It is just about perfect. If you like chocolate you'll like this! It is ultra smooth and creamy. It has a rich chocolate taste. Plus, it is not super sweet like most soft serve. The last point is very important to me as these days most ice creams are absolutely loaded with sugar or worse high fructose corn syrup. Not this one!
I can not see how anyone can give this little place less than a five star review. It's generally manned by high school or college kids, or the owners. They are always courteous and friendly. It's not McDonald's, with a timed assembly line running. But, if you want McDonald's there is one right down the road.
If you are staying in Williamsburg or passing by on the interstate I suggest stopping and giving Shoefly a try. I suspect you'll mark it on your map and return time and...
Read moreWasn't quite sure what to expect of this place. I drove past it while heading someplace else. The name of the establishment is what caught my attention. Add in the fact I like dairy products and voilà - I stopped by to check it out, even though it was winter-like weather outside. It's an outdoor, walk up to the window to place your order, and enjoy your treat at one of our picnic tables with an umbrella kind of establishment. Not too much unlike Rita's Water Ice in that regard. No one was at the window when I walked up, but I rang the bell for service and the young lady/worker quickly approached. I don't remember her name, but she was very nice and knowledgeable. Being a first-timer there, the menu options slightly overwhelmed me, but she answered the few questions I had. My children had kid-sized snoballs (Frog'r and Super Hero) and I had a milkshake (Signature Shoofly milkshake). Presentation of the snoballs was terrific and my kids enjoyed them immensely! Not much to say about the presentation of a milkshake in a cup with a lid over it, but it tasted delicious! I'd definitely visit this place again and try a combination of other flavors, but I'll probably wait until it...
