This a little corner restaurant. A mom and pop operation with all the modesty and charm you love about independent, and personal pride in their cooking spots.
It is primarily take out, a service counter but no counter seats (take out) but there are a couple 4-top tables in the back if you want to sit and eat but no table service. You carry your own food from counter to table because they don't have the extra staff (it's only a few steps, it's a small space).
The staff was lovely and welcoming, and the vibe is warm and cozy. The whole area is super clean (it reminded me that I should go home and clean my own floors! LOL) and the food AND coffee was excellent. I had breakfast of fish, grits and eggs with coffee and my hopes were met well.
I would absolutely recommend this place if you want good, genuine home cooking in a take out form (the parking in the area - like anywhere in the city - is not perfect so you might not find a space right near the entrance). It appears to be a well known and loved spot with locals who know it.
Music in background is R&B, and I was thankful that the tv was not playing the gloom and doom repeating loop channels or Fox news. Little details make a big difference and I loved the relaxed, happy vibe of this place.
Worth the visit for anyone who likes to support small, local, independent businesses and food made with a real personal investment and pride in quality and existence in a franchise driven market.

Read moreWas not impressed by any means imaginable. All food except fried food orders are precooked perhaps a day ahead and microwaved hot when you order. However the guy who builds the orders doesn't seem to know how.to microwave food properly. Two things you need to understand about microwave ovens one is they actually rob the flavor from precooked foods because they get extremely hot and two Never ever microwave food in a take out container always do it in a dish first then insert in take out container you'll find that the food will get hot all over instead of spots of hot. 2) I ordered the catfish their food is too salty. Probably because they use a store brand fish batter they are not clever enough to make their own with no salt added...Sad sad sad... And as for.the mac and cheese.. that alone was a total waste of time and gas money even driving to this place. The cheese they use is a cheap one you can tell because cheap cheese won't melt good enough an it looses its flavor consistency when you try to cook it ALWAYS . Trust me not too many places on Earth makes mac and cheese better than me. This place won't be...
Read moreFirst off, walking into Evelyn's reminded me of walking into a catfish restaurant in Mississippi. (That's a good thing) I was greeted pleasantly and was engaged in small conversation while taking my order. It felt genuine and personable. (I like that) I had the Catfish platter with greens, potato salad, Mac and cheese, with a piece of cornbread as my sides. The catfish was fried nicely and the size was what you would come to expect normally. The Mac was on the salty side and was probably the LCD (lowest common denominator)of all the sides. Greens had a nice vinegary taste to it and was seasoned with smoked turkey or something. I thought I was going to get sick from it because I'm not a meat eater. Thankfully I didn't... the potato salad was creamy with a good amount of chunks in it. It was seasoned well and they sprinkled a little paprika on top. Lastly the cornbread was soft and not too sweet to the point where it tasted like a cheap pound cake. It had a nice grit to it and wasn't too small of a piece either. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. I'll definitely...
