Title: A Hidden Gem of Authentic German Fare: Better Than Mainz Itself
Tucked away in a quiet corner of town, this unassuming German food haven is everything you never knew you needed. It’s not the bustling biergartens of Munich or the charming cobblestone cafes of Mainz, but it delivers something far rarer—authentic, unpretentious German comfort food done exceptionally well.
The setup is simple—more food store than restaurant, with only a few tables to enjoy your meal. But that’s part of its charm: it’s fast, efficient, and undeniably delicious.
The bratwurst is perfectly grilled with that iconic snap. Their schnitzel is a revelation—tender, golden-brown, perfectly seasoned and served with a side of spätzle.
The adjoining food store is a delightful surprise, stocked with authentic German groceries: everything from jars of curry ketchup to imported sauerkraut and hefty loaves of rye bread. It’s a one-stop shop for anyone yearning for a taste of Deutschland.
Having spent time in Mainz just last year, I can confidently say that this quiet little gem not only matches but surpasses the meals I had there. It’s proof that sometimes, the most unassuming places hold the greatest treasures.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of German cuisine or just craving something new, this spot is an absolute must. Get there early—their pretzels sell out fast, and once you’ve tried one, you’ll...
Read moreWhat a gem!! We were driving through Winchester and stopped here for dinner and didn’t regret it! The food is SO good, really, especially if you like German food - this is the place! My husband had a special- shnitzel with mushroom sauce and spatzle, and I had a cabbage roulade with potato salad - all awesome! But the homemade Black Forest cake was the absolute highlight- not too sweet, light and fluffy, with perfect plump cherries soaked in schnaps and the softest, the fluffiest, the most delicious whipped cream… wow, to die for! The prices are extremely reasonable and quite affordable for the quality of food that you’re getting. The owners are from Germany, so they know what they’re doing - nice, and honest people; the husband is cooking and the wife is the hostess, she’s so sweet and genuine - very self-conscious about her English speaking skills, so please compliment her - she does speak well! The place is super clean and nice… but it’s tiny, only a couple of tables, so if you plan to come with a company, most certainly call ahead to make a reservation. Oh, and if you want dumplings, call ahead as well… They also have some German food items for sale - sausages, cookies, chocolate, etc., so if you miss German or European food, this is the place to splurge! HIGHLY recommend and we’ll certainly come back if/when...
Read moreOrdered Sauerbraten with Spaetzel and red cabbage. Also ordered Brat with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. The Sauerbraten was delicious, you could taste the wine in the meat & gravy. Mashed potatoes were buttery and flavorful. The Bratwurst was flavorful without being overly salty. Sauerkraut and red cabbage were both delightful sides. Spaetzel had a nice chew to it and made a nice carrier for the Sauerbraten gravy.
I also purchased wieners and Hit cookies to go. You can buy a handful of different German foodstuffs there including canned goods, chocolate, other types of wurst. They are take out only for the moment, possibly due to the difficulty of finding help/low traffic- even then, they are definitely fast at getting your order ready. Please support this place, it's run by a pleasant German duo bringing us the wonderful world of German cuisine...
