My wife and I always looked forward to going to the location in North Conway for their close to authentic style of calimex. I know the owner is from LA and I grew up in so-cal so it was the closest I had been able to get to some of the taco shop staples that litter the California landscape. Imagine my excitement when I found they had opened a new location closer to home.
Well... It was disappointing to say the least. They have a fryer so they can make California burritos and carne asada fries (my favorite meals) but the fries were a under done and not crispy. The meat was overly greasy from sitting in the bin and doesn't have that char and depth of flavor that good carne asada has or that I've experienced in the N. Conway location. They also wrapped my burrito wrong and I was stuck with layers of ingredients as I went down the burrito instead of layers with everything in them. Who wants to eat a layer of cilantro, then guac, then fries, then meat? I saw they were wrapping it that way for everyone so that was weird and maybe a training issue. It seemed really hectic behind the counter and like no one really knew what was going on or how to run the line but pretty typical for a new location.
It was pretty pricey but that's standard for Mexican food in Maine, there was a lot of food too so that's good. I'll likely go back in a few months once they've gotten some of the newly opened restaurant things figured out and I'm sure it'll...
Read moreThe food here isn't very good. I wanted to love it as I'm from Texas, Hispanic, and love Mexican food. I ordered quite a lot to try different menu items and the only things that were alright were the guacamole/chips and the steak burrito.
The rice and beans are very bland and not seasoned. The street tacos all taste similar to each other and the bean/cheese burritos are unseasoned. The loaded fries were soggy and didn’t seem fully cooked. And lastly, the horchata was bland, didn't have cinnamon or vanilla, and was fairly watered down.
The service was good and the staff are friendly. The portion sizes aren't great for the price and if you're wanting really good Mexican food, this won't be satisfying. I totally concede that I have very high standards though so the food here may appeal to others.
Edit: I essentially wrote this review to dissuade others with higher standards from trying this place. From the owner's odd, unprofessional response, I would further edit this to say the service was also poor if this is how the owner responds to legitimate feedback. I don't particularly care about location-specific comparisons - the point was that this place is in Maine and that I've had legitimately great Mexican food in the past, which this is not. I wanted to like this place, but obviously it was a poor experience all around with an oblivious owner, over-priced options, poor food quality, and an unnecessary comparison between...
Read moreThis place leaves a lot to be desired both in food quality and customer service. I dined in for lunch with a friend. I ordered the Taco Sampler (3 tacos of Carne Asada, Carnitas, and Chicken ($12), accompanied with black beans and rice. The Taco Sampler came with a total of 9 soft tortillas!!! Talk about overkill with the ridiculous amount of tortillas. The scant amount of meat in all 3 tacos barely filled 2 tortillas! The rice was so dry, rendering it inedible. The black beans were bland, overcooked and dry. My friend ordered a Chicken Burrito(12$), except it was all filler with only a few pieces of chicken. She said her burrito was exceptionally bland. This was one disappointing dining experience. I complained to the older guy at the counter about both the lack of proteins in our meals, and the lack of flavor in both dishes. He stated "oh that's too bad, maybe the kitchen had a bad day." What kind of answer is that??? Worst customer service ever!! My friend and I were in disbelief at such a rude and cavalier response by an employee!! I spent $25 + tax and both of us left Luchador Tacos hungry. With both horrible food and horrible customer service there is no need for anyone to patronize Luchador Tacos. Avoid...
