Japan Express — Restaurant in Winter Park

After reading the reviews we were excited to try this place out. Unfortunately we were immediately turned off by the unfriendly staff and blaring tv in background. We kept an open mind as we ordered the steak and chicken hibachi, salmon roll, and dynamite roll. Our expectations were not high as it is takeout hibachi, but even by those standards the food was awful. The steak was grey and very chewy, the chicken was dry, and everything taste like it was dunked in soy sauce. The white sauce, salad and noodles were decent though. The soup came with a fifth of a sliced mushroom floating on top of lukewarm broth. Despite this underwhelming first course we were excited for the sushi. The sushi came out warm which was not a good start. The salmon role had no flavor and the dynamite roll was doused in sauce so it was actually edible. We recommend sushi 99. It is about the same price and 100 times better. My advice if you live by this establishment would be to just opt for the Mellow Mushroom like we almost did after our first...

Ordered takeout and got sick off of the sushi. It had a smell which I thought was odd. Of course I’m aware things can smell but it stunk of fish which sushi is NOT supposed to smell like. Also, it had a metallic taste and slime. I, before realizing this decided to have a few pieces as I was hungry at the time and within a half hour I began to feel queasy and had to run to the restroom more than a few times. Luckily it seems I got off light as fish food poisoning can be severe but anyone who even has a passing interest in sushi should know that it shouldn’t smell and needs to stay cool and fresh or else it can spoil. Really shocked of how rude the workers were at this restaurant. HORRIBLE customer service. Never coming here again. I understand that they may not have something on their menu but they dont need to talk down on their customers. They didn't even help in suggesting what was nice to eat on their menu. We asked if they had fried rice and they said "Does it look like I have that on my menu, you need to look at it again" and even when we asked what was a nice substitute they said "let me know when you're ready to order". Then we spoke of their bad customer service and they continued to be unprofessional, they called us "too sensitive" for trying to get a feel of what they had.
