We have been coming here every Christmas Eve for 5 years. It was usually very good. This past Christmas Eve was horrendous. It was reservation only so a couple weeks ago we made the reservation. We get a phone call last week asking if we wanted to order from the menu or would like the Victorian which they explained was a home style. We chose the Victorian. We were seated immediately upon our prompt arrival which was nice. After we were seated we waited about 10-15 minutes before we had to ask a server for service. We asked what was on the Victorian as we did not know and there weren’t any print outs, just a small piece of paper in a bulletin board out in the hotel lobby. The food started arriving an hour after arrival and we had 7 people, all of the portions were extremely small which included 4 pieces of bread, 4 small but very tasty prime rib, stuffing, turkey, salad, mashed potatoes. I asked for gravy and Au Jus for the prime rib and the servers response was “we don’t have those condiments available because it’s a basic dinner”. However the “basic dinner” was not reflected in the $35 per person price tag, that’s not a basic price. For $35 per person I want Au Jus with the prime rib, I want gravy with the mashed potatoes, even KFC has gravy with their $2 side of mashed potatoes. The turkey was cold. The “oyster stew” didn’t have any oysters in it and was just cold milk. After the 4 pieces of prime rib were fought upon, they had ran out. Ran out of bread. After dinner was over for us and our server was clearing our table we asked him if there were plates and silverware at the desert buffet. He said there were plates but we would need the silverware that he had already cleared so then put everyone’s dirty forks back on the table that were all in a pile on the dishes in his hand. Our server was very nice, just very inexperienced and for $35 a person I don’t want someone on their first day of the job who claimed to also have the “whole restaurant” to take care of. It was reservation only so there is no excuse. The desert buffet was disgusting. I walked up to it and children were playing with the cookies, young girls hair was resting in the rice pudding. There weren’t any desert plates even if you wanted anything. Nothing was labeled either so good luck trying to figure out what the hash brown looking thing was in the warmer. There were several groups of people who were seated after us and also overheard the server mentioning the several things they continued to run out of and couldn’t help but notice their frustration with how long everything was taking.

The definition of a mixed bag, but unfortunately I lean towards do not recommend. Staff is friendly, and the mac and cheese was particularly good - gooey, hearty, and overall very delicious. The atmosphere is perfectly quaint and even cozy in spots: the space has multiple rooms, a couple of old fireplaces, and an old cabin feel to it. Dozens of old stein mugs hang from the ceiling (each personalized for customers who have completed the tavern’s “100 beer challenge”). The “wagyu” burger is a borderline scam and burned into a hockey puck despite being ordered as medium rare. Our waiter was relatively nice, but not much of a talker and clearly not trained or knowledgeable about the menu; he was unable to answer even the most basic questions (I.e. “what do people like the most here?”) and would often just mumble a one word answer and awkwardly walk away. When we showed him the burnt burger, he said “oh” and had no additional response. Looks like my journey to the 100 beer milestone at Wolfe’s will end abruptly after my 1st. Hoping they can turn it around, as some improvements in the kitchen and training their wait staff could go a long way in making this a highly desirable stop for dinner/drinks in Wolfeboro.

We made reservations for their Thanksgiving buffet. It was a HUGE mistake! The food was luke warm at best & nothing was actually edible. It was supposed to have lobster in one dish but they must have been pureed because all I saw was mush. They had cheap nasty hake & fried eggplant that had a ton of wet vegetables on top. They had a variety of breads which might have been good 5 hours ago when they were first set out.But the piece of cranberry bread I got could have been used as a fire place brick. Now let's move onto the staff. RUDE INATTENTIVE & UNCARING is the best description I have for that lot. It began with the hostess who when we were called up to be lead to our table stood there ignoring us as she ease dropped on a conversation between the man at the podium & another customer and it got worse from there. Our waitress spent the entire meal hiding from her customers. She never offered us drinks after the first glass of water which actually came in the middle of our meal. She could have cared less when I told her the food was bad.. in fact she acted like I was interrupting her from getting back to her "extended break" she never even made eye contact with me or my husband. I spoke with two managers while I was there, I pointed out the DIRTY gritty nasty dishes they had set out & the fact that they were serving soup but there were NO SPOONS to be found anywhere. One of them "Veedock" I think is how it's spelled tried to tell me the spoons were on the table all the while continuing to walk & basically ignoring me. Um.. no.. if they were on the table I won't be walking around trying to hunt one down now would I ? After complaining they did bring me a piece of salmon that i couldn't choke down because it was fried in a vat of grease . It was literally pooling on the plate & t made my stomach turn. In short... don't waste your time or your money on this place. Life is far too short to be paying for bad food delivered by rude people.. (Response to owner) Who can't tell time. & alter the truth .. the managers that I hunted down & talked to didn't even bother to "talk to me " for a minute.. like I stated one of them never even stopped walking. The salmon they cooked must have been a rare species of "OIL SALMON" I'll bet they swim down stream instead of up. And this woman that responded to me had all she could do to put on a fake condescending smile while I spoke. Hey.. I already lost my money on this nasty bunch. I have nothing to gain with this review so if you decide to try them don't say I...

The day Manager, Randy was our Bartender and Server. Smiling, chatting , polite and helpful with a lot of information about our questions on the Inn's History, the town of Wolfboro and things to do and see. The evening Bartender, Matt made not only our night fantastically fun, but both nights. Finding most places close earlier than we are use to, and as we have dinner at 7:30, 8:00 we were thrilled to find that Wolf Tavern was open to have a cocktails or a beer 🍺 😀. So much conversing, actual interest in us a people not just a bar tab and a tip. We would go back for an early evening from Haverhill, Massachusetts just to have dinner and spend time seeing Matt again. And Selim. The sweetest, polite most hard worker. Learned many things from him in conversation about Asia, Europe, places to travel to and much more. We were impressed that someone from another culture, so young felt at ease with us " Older Folks" to carry on interesting 😀 informative conversations about many topics. Always a smile when we would see him throughout the day, at the Continental Breakfast, lunch, right through till Midnight and again the next day. BOTH MATT and SELIM ARE A HUGE ASSET to The Wolfboro Inn. Not just to us, but every guest who came in to the Tavern not there just for a drink. Offering to have your beautiful Fire🔥Pit lite to sit outside at night surrounded by 8 Addarondack chairs. Giving people wine cork screws and glasses to use in their rooms etc. It was our first time there to Celebrate my Birthday for 3 days. Our daughter came for 2 days traveling a good distance to get there. She loved the Tavern, the Bartenders, the music and the Pewter Mugs. It is definitely not our last time to go, hoping to see Wolfboro Inn and Wolf Tavern for a day trip, and in the snow. Thank 😊 You for such an Unexpectedly ❤️ Wonderful Time and Experience Cheryl &...
