First time here and WILL be the last!! Worst service I’ve ever encountered. took the waitress 15 minutes to get our drink order. As we were explaining our sushi order I had asked for crunch to be put on top of my roll, I order this at every sushi place and never have a problem. She proceeds to give me an attitude and say “it’s just going to fall off I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I no longer feel like having to explain myself so I just tell her to put it on the side and I’ll do it myself. No big deal whatever. a table of 4 walks in, sits down and not even 20 minutes later is being served their food, as if we haven’t been waiting for over an hour already. how can there be not even 4 tables in the entire restaurant and the last table to sit down is eating? It just doesn’t make sense. As we try to ask what’s going on the waitress has the audacity to tell me she doesn’t know what I am talking about and that the 4 top was sitting and ordered before us. Are you serious? I am a sever myself and If having two tables at a time is too overwhelming then maybe serving isn’t for you? Or multitasking at that. I understand there are to go orders but then hire more people!!! - What I think happened is the server was so unorganized at her job she forgot to put our order in and ended up putting in the 4 tops order in first then ours and when confronted she had to cover up her mistakes by saying they were there before us. But seriously you can only do that when your chefs aren’t making the food right in front of customers eyes. this restaurant needs a serious reality check on how to properly deal with situations like this and offer or do something to make it right. While no action of apologizing was taking place, and both the chef and waitress wanted to argue with paying customers, we left. my best advice is to only eat here if you have 4 hours to wait on a couple rolls and the energy to deal with a waitress who doesn’t know how to do their job. No wonder this place was empty the service SUCKS. Save your money, literally any other sushi place is better than this one, and they’ll actually treat their customers with...
Read moreThere are a lot of options for sushi in the northern Illinois/greater Chicagoland area, but Golden Rolls is my FAVORITE. Let me tell you why.
Golden Rolls does NOT skimp on the fish! The rolls may be comparative in general size to rolls that you get elsewhere, but when you order a sushi roll at this restaurant, you can visibly see that your roll has a generous portion of fish and avocado, areas where some restaurants save money by thinning down. The increased portion size on the good stuff gives you more bang for your buck and for your taste buds! This is true of their sashimi as well. The slices are generous, with only the sea bass being thinner cuts (it makes sense of course, because sea bass is considerably more expensive).
The sushi is served VERY COLD (if it's supposed to be cold, lol). I'm really picky about this, to be honest. In my opinion, the temperature at which a cold roll is served is the difference between an okay roll and a roll that is crisp, refreshing, and bright. Golden Rolls has always been the latter in my experience.
I know some people say this place is pricey--unless you are accustomed to eating at a sushi buffet, I really don't understand this, as it is quite comparable to most non-buffet locations that I have dined at and, as stated above, has more generous portions equaling greater overall value. It's not a cheap dinner out but I don't expect that of a sushi night.
Atmosphere is generally pretty quiet which I appreciate.
I am not a fan of cooked/hot rolls but I have tried a couple here when others have ordered them and even those are good. I haven't ordered a non-sushi entree so can't comment much on that. I have actually never had anything here that I don't like, but with my preference for cold rolls that are big on the fish-factor, my favorites are their Rainbow Roll, Alaskan Roll, Boston Roll, Crazy Roll, and Cucumber Eel Roll. The tuna tataki appetizer is also fabulous here (it's a warm dish) and their seaweed salad is very tasty (though it's an acquired taste and texture).
