Three family members and I dined on Tuesday, July 23. Our server came tableside and began complaining about other patrons and their impatience. We placed our order for drinks and when he returned, our food selections. It took quite some time before we received our soup (considering that the restaurant was not busy). When he brought our entrees, a family member remarked that my potato pancakes were not cooked (she was comparing them to hers which were golden brown and cooked properly). I called the waiter to the table and asked him to have them remade since they were under cooked). He took them to the kitchen and returned to our table telling me that he tasted the returned entree and "they were not under cooked and that this is how they prepared them in Poland". I compared them to my family member's dish and he said hers were overcooked. A shouting matched ensued with him screaming that he worked in Italy and France and never received a complaint for the food or service. I pointed out how another family member's food was burned (she couldn't eat the entree) and he said, "that's the way they're suppose to be). He came back to the table later and started yelling once again. I told him to get the hell away from us. Another server came to our table and apologized to us for his extremely horrible behavior. He said that he was wrong and should never have addressed us in such a manner. We offered to pay for two of the entrees but he declined. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Highlander House. We always enjoyed eating there and found the food and service to be quite good....
Read moreOrdered for the first time. Mother wasn’t feeling well, I thought we’d have some traditional Polish food. I’m under the impression they worked in conjunction with a service. However, I commend them for being willing to travel 5 miles to deliver. The food was very carefully and thoughtfully packaged for the trip. Not to mention they weren’t ice cold upon arrive. Thank you. We tried a little variety of items. Get 3 different soups. (The red borscht. The little dumplings complimented it well. Mom got tripe. She enjoyed it and she’s picky sometimes. The chicken noodle broth was nice and clear. All high quality and tasty. For lack of better terms, the potato pancakes taste like they’re supposed to, lol. Most importantly, they were not greasy! I ordered the cabbage rolls (golopki) I took one in tomato and other in mushroom sauce. Both great, just personal preference at that point I guess. The ratio of meat was generous with the rice inside. Didn’t even need a knife to cut through the tender cabbage. Some places just skimp and give you a rice roll, not Highlander House. Mom went on a whim and tried the ribs. To be transparent, they were just a touch over done. But, hey, this place isn’t pretending to be Terry Black. Sides…The roasted potatoes were great. Not undercooked. And, for the cold side we chose the (mizerja) sliced cucumbers with dill and creamy sauce. Cool and refreshing. The cucumbers were very crisp and tasty. I’d love to dine in, I have a feeling it’s outstanding. The food held up in the long drive. Would definitely return in person or order in the future....
Read moreThe ambiance: This place is absolutely adorable. I love the decor and the design. The polish skirts on the waitresses are also flattering and a nice touch, although having been a waitress, I would miss having pockets.
The staff: I ordered food for pickup over the phone. The hostess/waitress was very nice and answered all my questions.
The food: ~ Full order pierogi - potato and cheese - $11.95 ** 4/5 This comes with a dozen pierogi ( did you know pierogi is the plural form? I just learned that! ;) topped with bacon and chives (I think), and a ramekin of sour cream. Unfortunately, in the 15 minutes it took to get home, these were only lukewarm by the time I ate them. Next time I need to try them right away, when they're hot. Regardless, these are yummy. They taste like mashed potatoes dumplings. I forgot to ask for no bacon on top, but I was able to pick that off.
~ Side warm cabbage $3 * 5/5 This sauerkraut was so flavorful! I was really stoked on this dish. I highly recommend you try their sauerkraut. Even my bf who doesn't like sauerkraut said it was good.
~ Kolaczky $1.50 ** 4/5 I ordered a strawberry kolaczky. The cookie was good. The strawberry jam was very mild in flavor. I like that it isn't sweet. Because of the lack of sweetness, my boyfriend wasn't a fan....but that's okay, more...
