I have to put in a good word for North Town Coffee. They serve Stumptown Coffee for all of their coffee beverages. They have nitro cold brew coffee on tap, also Stumptown brand. Their baristas are always friendly, although during very busy times seem a bit overworked. Don't expect sparkling conversation from your barista when they have a line of 5 or 10 people to take orders from and prepare drinks for.
Food selections are limited, but the pastries are from a local caterer's bake shop and are very good. I've never been policed by their staff for bringing in food so long as I order a beverage.
Their gelato is house made and in small batches. It is always fresh. They also experiment a little with different flavors, so it helps to be a regular to notice when they do a flavor change or experiment.
This place is a very popular hangout for college students and students from the local medical school. Depending on the time of day, and proximity to mid-terms, you might find it hard to find a place to sit down with all the studying students.
The cafe is located in the main waiting area of the old train station. The ceiling is very high and slightly domed, so the slightest noise and conversation echos significantly. It isn't exactly a super quiet atmosphere, but there are much louder atmosphere's in a number of other downtown...

We went on a family outing, planning to hang out in the kids room (dad get some work done on the computer while baby and i play). If she were crawling already I would have left in an instant - it was filthy, way worse than a McDonald’s play place! The floor was a gross looking carpet with an area covered by foam mats that probably look awesome when clean, but looked as though they had never been cleaned. I spent 30 min on my hands and knees scrubbing 4 square sections to make a suitable place for a child to sit (thankfully she just sits at the moment). The toys were great, but also filthy. It was a germ cesspool. I get that kid areas are usually a little icky, but this was obviously an uncared for place. We left after I finished scrubbing my 4th square foam tile. North Town, please give a little love to your kids area! It’s a great idea but you’ve got to use materials that can be clean, and you need to do regular cleaning. We probably won’t return as a family until baby is old enough to...
Read moreI come to Yakima every month for work and love to stop in at this coffee shop for breakfast or a quick coffee - aesthetically it is SO great. Ok - BUT the last handful of times I've been there, there are two employees that work together, they're usually the only two working & are obviously not getting along. The woman is usually the cashier and the guy is usually making the espresso/drinks. The last time I was there the woman was stomping around supposedly stocking things etc - going in and out of the back room - she seemed upset - while people were made to stand there waiting to be rung up - the guy making the drinks had to make the drinks and ring us up. He was nice enough that time - but honestly, I remember the time before I was there he almost threw my drink at me & didnt say a word with a sour puss face. All that to say - kids, kiss & make up already would ya?? All I can think of now when I want to go there for breakfast is that these two - who will still be making the atmosphere weird & tense - I don't want to go back & haven't. Unfortunately - going back to Starbucks....
