I really wanted to like Pecan Tree Cafe. As a Black man, I make it a point to support Black-owned businesses whenever I can. Unfortunately, after two separate experiences, I can confidently say I won’t be back.
The first time I ordered was on Easter through DoorDash for pickup. I arrived right on time, but had to wait about 5 minutes as the guy at the kitchen window told me to “hold on” without any further acknowledgment. When I finally asked if the food sitting on the counter was mine, he again told me to wait. After another couple of minutes, he finally came over, saw my DoorDash screen, and realized it was my order. His attitude immediately changed and he apologized. I brushed it off because the food was absolutely amazing — I ordered an oxtail dinner with two mac and cheese sides and a catfish dinner with sides as well.
Today was my second (and last) visit. I figured I’d call in my order directly to save some money. Big mistake. The woman who answered the phone sounded impatient and rude, making me feel like I was bothering her. When I asked for two mac and cheese sides again, she said they don’t do that — which isn’t true, because I had it before. But again, I let it slide.
When I arrived to pick up my order, she was talking with another woman at the counter. I respectfully stepped aside and waited, texting on my phone. She didn’t greet me or acknowledge me, just glanced at me and kept talking. Five minutes go by, and another man walks in — and immediately she greets him and asks what he wants. At that point, I felt completely disrespected. I was there first, patiently waiting, and she was about to serve someone who just walked in.
I walked up and asked if she had my order ready. Her response? “Oh, now you want to talk to me,” followed by a laugh. Extremely unprofessional. I told her my name for the order, and she snapped back, “Oh, I’m just waiting for you to say a slick response.” Again, totally inappropriate behavior for a customer you’ve just met — especially a potential regular. I smiled and told her, “Nope, I would never disrespect the person making my food,” paid for my order, and left.
The food was fresh and delicious again — I won’t take that away from them. But the total came out to around $50 for two plates that should’ve been $18 each, and without a receipt, I have no way to verify the charges.
Bottom line: amazing food, terrible customer service. I had two chances to be impressed by their hospitality and left disappointed both times. No matter how good the food is, customer service matters just as much. Sadly, I can’t continue to support...
Read moreWent here with my family after seeing a video on Facebook. There were some good things about it and some things that could have been better. The pros: The place was clean and the ambiance was ok if you wanted to sit down instead of taking out. Had a pretty decent variety of food to choose from, fish to chicken to oxtails. The cons: This is made to order for at least the fish so there is a bit of a wait. Food is a little pricey. We got 3 whiting entrees, with 2 chocolate cake slices and a strawberry pound cake slice and a side of wings which totaled $85. Food: We ordered 3 whiting entrees, one with Mac and cheese and fries, the second had 2 portions of collard greens and the third was yams and fried cabbage. We all agreed that the fish was delicious and well seasoned. Good size pieces and not too greasy. The Mac and cheese was ok but it could have used some seasonings like garlic powder, black pepper etc. The collard greens were ok. The yams were up there with the fish, sweet and savory, cooked well would definitely get again. The fried cabbage, I wouldn’t have considered it fried and it was mixed with collard greens, definitely could have used more seasoning. We got plain wings and they were ok as well just looked very dry and had very little breading .The chocolate cake tasted like store bought cake and was super dense and dry. I would go again and get the yams and fish for sure. Whiting 9.5/10 Yams: 9/10 Collard greens: 7/10 Fried cabbage: 4/10 Mac and cheese: 6/10 Wings:...
Read moreI went here being from Maryland where seafood is made incredibly well where I would catch and cook my own catfish and the fried catfish that I had here was delicious and seasoned perfectly, alongside it I got mac and cheese which was super cheesy and creamy. I then also ordered oxtail with rice and beans with fried plantains. my first time ever having fried plantains and because of the pecan tree they are now a food that I will be seeking out because it was so good. the oxtail was rich in flavor and super tender, the spices and browning were to a level that was just perfect. the rice and beans were incredible very well seasoned and when you mix the sauce from the oxtail with it it is a game changer. All in all the food was incredible.
The service was amazing as well we were the only customers in the store and Kevin the owner and I had a conversation about food, football, and college. the place is super well kept and clean. After my meal I still had a little food leftover and Kevin brought me a bag without me having to ask. there is a genuine level of care for the customers and belief in the food here. I cannot wait to come back and try everything else...
