1 star for this location. 5 stars for all others. Today was the first time I stopped at this one. It will definitely be my last. I should have just drove to the Racine location and I'll tell you why. Being located inside a gas station should have been a huge red flag, but I decided to be open minded and give it a shot. What a mistake. I live in Milwaukee and was in the area. I always try to stop for kringle when I'm in town. O&H is usually my go-to source so that's why I gave this location a shot. It looked legitimate so I grabbed what I thought were 2 cherry kringle. I drove about an hour home to Milwaukee and dropped off 1 cherry to a family member and enjoyed a piece. All was well, at least I thought it was. When I finally got home later that evening I couldn't wait to cut mine open. I was particularly excited for my girlfriend to try it. She moved here from out of state and never had kringle before. I proudly displayed the kringle to her, cradling it in my arms with as much affection and care as you would give to a small child or infant. After a brief introduction about kringle and O&H bakery I grabbed a scissors and broke the seal. It was perfectly glazed and very visually appealing. I pressed my knife into the kringle. Alas, almost immediately I noticed that the color was off. I was in denial momentarily. To my horror, it was APPLE. Despite the label clearly saying CHERRY. I didn't think this could be real, surely I had to be living some kind of nightmare. For only in dreams would something so sweet and savory be put in front of my face and then ripped away just as quickly as it appeared. Still in denial, I finished cutting the piece and handed it to my girlfriend to test.. it was definitely apple. I even ate a piece to confirm. My eyes began to feel watery as I stood in the kitchen in utter disbelief, the moonlight shining through our kitchen window reflecting off my tears. A tear ran down my cheek, I dropped to my knees and looked into the stars and asked "WHY GOD? Why give me apple instead of cherry despite the label clearly saying cherry? What kind of sick joke is this? What did I ever do to deserve this?" My girlfriend came up behind me and gently placed her hand on my shoulder and softly whispered in my ear "everything will be alright". I wanted to believe her, I really did. Yet here I sit, eating apple kringle with a hint of salt from my tears. You failed me gas station location O&H bakery.
Seriously, how hard is it to put the correct label on kringle? The apple was still good but I didn't want that. You guys owe me a cherry kringle. Send me an email offering to rectify this situation and I'll adjust my review...
Read moreThis is the place that you need to go to.!! If there is anywhere in the country or the world for that matter that you want to visit and experience a Danish that will blow your mind then this is the place you need to go to. They have what is called a KRINKLE!! And in my opinion it is probably the best Danish I have ever had. It is a ring shaped Danish with either almonds or pecans or fruit inside wrapped in a pastry that has been folded with butter over and over so the dough is this tender flaky texture with a taste that is out of this world! And then they put many different types of ingredients inside , then they top it off with a vanilla icing on top, and that is the creme d'le creme!! You can choose from many different flavors,my favorite is the pecan and now I have a new one which is called the Wisconsin. It is a absolute wonderful delight and is filled with berries and cream cheese and topped off with the vanilla icing on top so incredible! These pastries are worth the trip. If you're in the Wisconsin area they have two locations but the one that I go to is in a petro truck stop in Racine. They have a bakery inside and you can choose from many flavors right there and they bake them fresh. They are also 24 hours they bake them and put them in a shelf that you can choose from anytime 24 hours. They also have boxes there that you can put them in and either mail them to somebody or just safely carry them they are very well wrapped I will take pictures and show you how they are wrapped. I mean they actually go through the effort of inserting them into a wax paper type cover with their logo on it with a cardboard inside to make sure that the paper doesn't squish it down and there is a film of plastic right on top to keep the icing from sticking to the paper as well. I mean it's very well thought out!! They will have been15 years since my last visit and I craved them everyday until I got back there. The first thing I did when I got into Wisconsin was go there and I got many. And I am not disappointed on any of them! Go there grab two or four I promise you you will want to go back and get...
Read moreThe Bjorn: O&H Danish Bakery opened in 1949 and has been family owned for four generations. Although they’re known primarily for their Kringles, their sweet roll of the month for April is the Bjorn. Bjorn means bear in Danish, which is an appropriate name for this treat that resembles a bear claw pastry. O&H's sweet roll is filled with cream cheese and a strip of rich chocolate. Additionally, it is dipped in silky chocolate and finished with a honey glaze. It may be a "bear claw", but this thing was like an elephant's foot, it was massive! My taste buds were enthralled by the perfect combination of sweet and salty (there's pinches of it on the honey glazed portion). Although the filling is thin, looks can be deceiving as it packs more than enough flavor. The portion glazed in honey's flavor reminded me a bit of honey twist pretzels, while the texture of the chocolate end evoked memories of a dipped cone. Texturally the pastry itself is pleasantly chewy. I'm not a hunter, but if literal bear claws tasted like these then I'd be the next Theodore Roosevelt. Doughboy approved...
