Let's be honest. Washtenaw Avenue in Ypsilanti is a special kind of purgatory. It's a concrete ribbon of strip malls and chain stores, a landscape designed to pacify and anesthetize. But in this beige, corporate desert, there's a little oasis, a place called Pita Pita. You walk in, and the smell alone tells you everything you need to know. This isn't some focus-grouped, fast-casual mediocrity. This is the scent of a hundred years of memory, of a thousand meals, of someone's grandmother watching over the grill. I went for the shawarma mix combo platter, because when faced with two beautiful options, a man of indecision—or a man who just wants more—takes both. The plate arrives, a beautiful, sprawling testament to unapologetic flavor. The chicken, shaved from a vertical spit like a pagan offering, is moist and deeply seasoned, a far cry from the dry, flaccid poultry that haunts so many lesser establishments. The beef, with its rich, savory swagger, holds its own. They're a perfect pair, a tag team of flavor. But let’s talk about the garlic sauce. My God, the garlic sauce. It’s a white, unctuous triumph, a creamy, powerful emulsion that hits you with a beautiful, brutal force. This isn't some afterthought in a plastic cup. This is the heart and soul of the meal, the culinary equivalent of a sucker punch in the best possible way. It clings to everything, elevating the fragrant rice, giving the crisp salad a new reason to exist, and coating the shawarma with a layer of pure, unadulterated pleasure. You will offend people with your breath. You...
Read morePita pita has always been one of my fave stops in Ypsi. Not today. Ugh. I’m so disappointed to be writing this review, but trying to save the next person the $60 we spent on yuckyiness. The garlic sauce…. Delicious… the young lady who rang us out… lovely…. Those are the two positives.
They told me last time PPE was important to them, yet only the person who rang me out had a mask on. The people preparing food had no masks.
The hummus tasted like fridge. The falafel was ice cold in the middle and wet…. Just cold, wet balls of falafel. My fiancé got the chicken shawarma and it was just bone dry chicken chunks.
I asked about kid items and she said burgers or chicken strips. The burgers were gigantic and the consistency of hockey pucks and the fries were white and barely cooked.
I don’t know what’s happening there, but I hope they fix it. It’s been an essential stop for me for so long, it’s hard to believe what I brought home tonight.
I haven’t been here in a like a year, but I’ve been going to Pita Pita for twenty years and this was a horrendous drop in quality, especially since they were in no way understaffed. Very...
Read moreGood service, great food, reasonably priced, what more could you ask for?
The spicy eggplant is awesome (good kick and the eggplant is soft and amazing and holds its own) - as are many of the vegetarian sandwiches. (I've gone here with vegetarian friends and family and they've all been impressed - cauliflower and potato is another fave).
We usually pair it with the chicken/rice/garlic sandwich (Riz B) and each eat half - it can be quite spicy! Slight variations depending on who is cooking, but nothing major.
Fattoush is delicious and since I can happily eat this for two days straight, they're kind and always put the dressing and pita chips on the side if I ask (so I can take the leftover fattoush for lunch without it getting soggy... I know it's a stupid request but they're so nice about it and it's the best lunch. That's really appreciated.)
Haven't dined in for awhile as the carryout is so quick and easy. But when I have the service was decent.
Also the mint lemonade is the best. And the...
