⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Plant Based Coney - Vegan Comfort Food Done Right

Plant Based Coney is an absolute gem for vegan comfort food lovers. Located in Ypsilanti, this all-vegan spot offers a nostalgic menu packed with plant-based takes on Coney classics, and it’s worth every bite. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or just curious, this is a must-visit!

The Food

We decided to try one of everything on the menu (almost!), and here’s what stood out: • Hot Dog & Coney Dog (With Cheese): The plain vegan hotdog was simple and flavorful, but the Coney Dog and Coney Dog with cheese stole the show. As a cheese lover who typically dislikes vegan cheeses, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the cheese was—it added just the right touch. • Macaroni and Cheese: The house-made mac and cheese was rich and comforting, topped with bread crumbs. While the noodles weren’t my personal favorite, the flavor made up for it. • Chicken Noodle Soup: This plant-based take on a classic was flavorful and nostalgic, featuring plant-based “chicken” and a hearty broth. Perfect for a cold day. • Chili: A definite highlight! It’s reminiscent of Wendy’s chili but with a vegan twist. I appreciated that it didn’t rely on common fillers like black beans, quinoa, or sweet potatoes—it was hearty, flavorful, and satisfying. • Chicken Sandwich (Grilled & Breaded): Both options delivered! The breaded chicken reminded me of a classic Wendy’s chicken sandwich, while the grilled option was equally flavorful. • Grilled Cheese: Another win! The vegan cheese was gooey and delicious, and it didn’t dawn on me until later that this was entirely plant-based.

Though we didn’t try the fries or tots, they’re next on our list for sure.

The Drinks

Their sodas are a nostalgic throwback—clean, natural, and free of chemicals or processed additives. It’s hard to find drinks like these anywhere else, making them the perfect pairing for the meal.

Menu Versatility

From sandwiches and bowls to sides and desserts, Plant Based Coney offers something for everyone. Their 100% vegan menu even includes gluten-friendly options, and their focus on air-fried, compostable offerings shows their commitment to sustainability.

What’s Missing?

If I had one suggestion, it would be for the restaurant to add a website. Their Facebook and Instagram are great for updates, but a dedicated website would make it easier for those not on social media to explore the menu and learn more about the restaurant.

Final Thoughts

Plant Based Coney is the ultimate vegan comfort food spot. The combination of nostalgic flavors, creative plant-based twists, and a welcoming vibe makes this place a must-visit. Whether you’re craving a Coney Dog, chili, or grilled cheese, they’ve got you covered.

Highly recommend stopping by and exploring their menu—you won’t be...

I Inhaled Two Vegan Coney Dogs and I'm Not Sorry About It

Let's talk about my latest food adventure that proves vegans can be just as gloriously gluttonous as anyone else. I recently stumbled into Plant Based Coneys, a cozy little spot in Ypsilanti, Michigan that's doing something both brave and possibly insane – veganizing classic Americana diner food. And let me tell you, they're doing it spectacularly.

The moment my friend and I walked into this clean, unpretentious Coney Island joint, we were greeted with the kind of warmth usually reserved for long-lost relatives. The menu is deliberately small – a refreshing change from those novel-length menus that make you question if any kitchen could possibly master that many dishes. These folks chose quality over quantity, focusing on perfecting plant-based versions of diner classics.

Now, here's where I need to make a confession. I ordered their vegan Coney dog, and... well, I ate it so fast that when it came time to take a picture for this blog, I had to order a second one. Yes, you read that right. I'm not proud (actually, I kind of am). Picture this: a perfectly grilled vegan dog, smothered in their house-made chili, topped with diced onions and that signature yellow mustard. It's the kind of food that makes you forget you're eating plant-based – and I mean that in the best possible way.

To accompany my moment of hot dog bliss, I went full nostalgic with a cherry soda and a side of mac and cheese. While the mac could've used a bit more of that vegan cheesy love (don't we all need more cheese in our lives?), it was the Coney dog that stole the show. And my heart. And apparently my ability to eat at a socially acceptable speed.

Will I be back? Let's just say I've already started working my way through their menu in my dreams. And this time, I promise to try to eat slowly enough to at least get a photo before demolishing my food. Maybe. No promises though.

Cons: Lack of Parking. But it's Ypsilanti so you expect that.

No Bar Foot Rail for us short people.

Need more cheese on the Mac and Cheese. Maybe offer it on the side or a double helping at a reasonable price.

Pros: Firm Coney Dog with just enough give Fresh buns Grilled not Boiled And thankful, Order to Go, and...

I came in having relatively low expectations & they blew those completely out of the water! These tasted exactly like other Coney dogs.I've had some might notice a texture difference with the impossible dog other than that you'd have no idea it was a vegan pot dog! I love the tap sodas.I got the blackcherry cream & it was wonderful. Black cherry soda is my very , very favorite so it was fun to see it on tap! My only nit pick is I'd like to have had a slightly larger portion of tots. They were perfectly crispy, nicely seasoned & not overwhelmingly salty! The staff is really kind and the atmosphere is totally laid back. I haven't been able to eat red meat in about 3 years (had a rate reaction to a medication). I really missed coney dogs! I was so excited to find this place and how delicious it is! It's...

I'm not a vegetarian/vegan, but this place doesn't disappoint! Everything tasted SO GOOD! Neurodivergent heads up: they have local soda brands, which are delicious, but if you're soda-picky, or expecting certain beverages, plan ahead. They have draft sodas, so you could ask to try a sip if you need. You order at the counter and then sit down, they bring your food to you. Water is self serve. The staff were friendly, and masked. Everything they use is compostable! I love it. Treat yourself to a big pickle. They're not exaggerating.
