Da Nang's Hidden Tiki Paradise - An Absolute Must-Visit!
You know those places you almost don't want to tell anyone about, just to keep the secret for yourself? That's exactly how I feel about MAKARA. This place is a true hidden gem. Tucked away and almost invisible from the street, finding it feels like you've been let in on something special.
The moment you step inside, you're transported. The vibe is pure tiki escapism—cozy, dimly lit, and incredibly chill. It’s the perfect antidote to the bustling streets of Da Nang. It's not a loud, thumping bar; it's a place where you can actually sit, talk, and savor what you're drinking. Our night was made truly unforgettable by our bartender, M. His passion for his craft is infectious. Not only did he speak perfect English, but he took the time to chat with us, understand what we liked, and guide us through the menu. You can just tell he loves what he does. He even gave us a sneak peek at some of his new experimental cocktails he was working on, which was such a cool and personal touch.
Now, let's talk about the drinks. If you do one thing in Da Nang, go to MAKARA and ask for the special Mai Tai. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the best cocktails I have ever had in my life. It was a revelation—perfectly balanced, complex, and so, so good.
It's no surprise the drinks are on another level when you see their rum selection. They specialize in "Rhum," and it has to be the most extensive collection in the entire city. It's a paradise for any rum enthusiast, but even if you're not, the quality of the ingredients shines through in every single sip.
MAKARA isn't just a bar; it's an experience. It’s for people who appreciate high-class cocktails, a relaxed atmosphere, and genuine, personal service. I’m already planning my next visit. Do yourself a favor and find this place. You...

Sit back on plush lounge seating as bartenders craft cocktails that do more than taste good—they connect you to Vietnamese history, myth, and place. Try the Naughty Monkey (a nod to Sơn Trà Mountain and Champa lore), or pick from tropical rum blends spiked with local herbs and fruit. Non-alcoholic options are equally creative and engaging.

Read an online review about this bar when I reached Da Nang, so dropped in for an early drink enroute to watch a jazz band elsewhere.
What a lovely, charming place with a relaxed speakeasy vibe. There was just one other guy in the place at the time (I was way early at 7.00pm), who turned out to be the owner Mark, who's originally from North Carolina. Mark also spent 20 years in San Francisco, home to the tiki bar concept which he has now brought to Vietnam - the bar is about a year old as I write this. Beautiful and classy decor, with a Vietnamese accent - an eclectic blend of Polynesian and local. Spent an hour chatting with Mark - conversation is a waning art and I enjoyed every minute at Markara. They also made me a fantastic Boulevardier, my preferred cocktail; and yummy pulled pork sliders. Ended up staying for a second drink!
I liked the place so much that I came back a few days later for a late night drink, and while Mark was not in that night, it was full and I enjoyed a rewarding conversation with Sung, the bartender. She's a food content creator by day and also, taught me lot about Vietnamese culture and customs. Stayed till 1.00am. Love the bar, the ambience and the people there. Will be back for sure, the next time I'm in Da Nang. Highly recommended -...
