we came especially by personal invitation from one of the performing musicians. we asked the lovely waitress if it's ok that only some of us order, and she approved with a smile. we suggested to her that they replace the coca-cola owned brand of soda on their menu with the cherished locally made Danh Thanh that also comes in a zero-waste refillable glass bottle, she was positively curious yet never heard of it, so one of us went out to bring them a bottle to sample. we had inspiring personal conversations with others at our table and enjoyed the music performance. suddenly a tall bohemian elder came over and without introduction offered one of us to buy him a drink. he thanked him but he was the designated driver. in no-time and no dialog the man lost his temper and demanded we leave right away! with threats of violence and calling the police. this happened very quickly and we remained calm. at first we were surprised and thought to ourselves perhaps it's just a confused old man - why would one of the owners behave this way? this is just a small place in a laid back area in hoi an. the waitress came to calm him down, but he would not listen to her or to us, just insisted that we leave right away. he was triggered further when one of us returned with the sample local soda. it looked like some past-trauma took over him. most of the guests were a generation older than us, so perhaps he didn't like it.. we don't know but of course this is just a misunderstanding, but there was no room to resolve with this guy (reading the reviews here it must be "brad'), to explain ourselves or to hear what is his problem.. that if we were told at the beginning otherwise, we would've of course ordered something, or to offer to just pay for our seats, etc.. we are on the road for over a year around the world and were never treated this way, people are honored to meet us and we are honored to meet them. it was unfortunate that this was instead of other options for the evening, and our conversation with people was cut off rudely as well as our friend's performance and to be screamed at as if we had any ill intention or malice. but at least we got a good story to tell. and congrats this is our first negative feedback ever! this guy was practically begging for it. enjoy.
UPDATE: we heard that shortly (like, really shortly) after this incident brad passed away. may he rest in peace. did he just take our on us some pent up bitterness he had? or did we somehow inflict ... guess a designated driver doesn't...
Read moreWe went to Red Lantern Cocktails several nights whilst staying in An Bang. The atmosphere was really good, great cocktails and pizzas. The owners of the bar, especially Brad, make you feel very welcome. Their motto being come as a stranger and leave as a friend is so true. Thursday nights they have live jazz music which brings in a lot of people and the atmosphere is the best. About a week ago on the Thursday night, it was very busy and 3 young people came in with their own drinks and expected to stay for free entertainment. We didn’t really think it was appropriate as some of the people who were there buying drinks couldn’t sit down. One of the owners came and spoke to them and asked them to please leave. They put on a big performance over it and we were so pleased the owner ended up getting them to leave. This showed us how they look after their customers really well. I certainly will be visiting again if ever in An Bang. Thanks guys for making our holiday even...
Read moreDung is a top-class mixologist with a lot of experience. Brad has more than a story or 3 tell. They are the 2 business parners you'll meet in this very friendly establishment on the main road through An Bang village.
Prices are really keen.
And if you've already had that experience where you're offered beer with ice or beers that have only been chilled for a short while, the beers here are PROPERLY cold! Otherwise, Brad wouldn't be drinking them.
The business motto is "come as a stranger, leave as a friend" and it's that type of environment.
Look out for the Red Lanterns or the Primary School the cocktail bar is opposite.
