The beers are great. They rival some of the ones I get back in the states. Their brew master know what they're doing, full props there. It's their veggie dip platter you got to look out for. It's slamming! And not in the best way.
After scarfing down some cucumbers on their veggie dip plate, I left satiated. A belly full of beer and a snack, who could complain. Oh, that belly complained a couple of hours later, alright. It had me halfway between my bathroom and hallway for hours writhing in what I unbelievable agony. The cold floor soothed that fever, though, and I made peace with my sleeping arrangements that night.
Without a doubt, it was the worst food poisoning I had gotten on any of my international trips. Though it might rank up there with getting cholera that one time back in 2007. But this time surely it was salmonella, probably from cross contamination of the cucumbers.
I paid for it for the next couple of days, even now as I'm writing this after a visit to the pharmacy. You know what they say if you're still peeing out your butthole 3 whole days later.
I was with two others who partook in the plate of feisty hell. One didn't have it nearly as bad as me, a few days on the toilet, and an upset stomach for the remainder. How i wish we could have trade places. The other had a nibble at first and thought against it, wise choice. He sat and watched me scarf it down, like a fool I was. Why didn't he tell me better? I am contemplating our friendship at this moment.
Again, the beers and service are great there, and I volleyed with the idea of not leaving a review at all. But I wanted to give a heads up to patrons not to fall into a safe sense of security just because of street food stalls or sit-down table one, Montezuma's revenge gets everyone.
Please just do better with practicing serve safe.
Catch you on the bright side when I can hop off this porcelain throne.
P.S. before anyone @ me on this, yes, I am certain it was food from this establishment. And I really...
Read moreDropped in after a pint at The Cham on a local’s recommendation, and I’m glad I did. For two craft beer spots, they couldn’t be more different.
The taps here are excellent—varied and well kept. Plenty of IPAs (arguably a couple too many), plus a cracking Pilsner and a tasty Saison. The pizza was superb too—far better than I’d expected.
The vibe is calm, almost a haven for beer geeks. The full brewing kit’s on show at the back, which I think is brilliant. However, I was expecting chaos. Why?
Now, the gossip. I learned this place once had a distasteful brewer so dodgy you’d think it was a wind up. I’ve no idea what possessed anyone to give him the keys to a brewhouse. He used to run a bar in Hoi An, and I’m still amazed he wasn’t packed straight out of the country on the threat of violence alone, particularly when drunk. Word is he’s now at Cadillac, back in Hoi An, which, given the owner’s reputation there, makes perfect sense.
All the more reason I was hoping to bump into Sean, the owner here. I’d love to swap a few stories about that hire with proper tales that’d make his hair curl. Fair play to him though: he clearly saw sense, and it shows. I’m also fairly sure I met him years ago, pre-Covid—ironically, I think it was at that very aforementioned bar.
Top-rate beer, cracking food, and a genuinely lovely team.
Highly...
