After a leisurely afternoon exploring the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, my cousin and I were craving a good meal to cap off our day. Wienstein & Gavino’s, located just a short walk from the museum, felt like the perfect spot to unwind and indulge in delicious food. The inviting atmosphere immediately drew us in, and from start to finish, it was a memorable dining experience. Wienstein & Gavino’s is a great spot for anyone looking for a refined yet cozy atmosphere with Italian-inspired dishes. The service, food, and ambiance make it a solid choice for a relaxed meal in Montreal, especially if you’re near the Museum of Fine Arts. Whether you’re in the mood for a comforting pasta or a light seafood appetizer, this restaurant delivers a memorable dining experience. Video review will be posted on TikTok @Foxy.appetite and Instagram @Foxyappetite soon! In depth review: Ambiance: The space is warm and stylish, with a cozy bistro feel and plenty of seating. While it’s large, it never felt too noisy, and we were able to enjoy a peaceful meal upstairs. The atmosphere strikes a nice balance between lively and intimate. Drinks: My cousin had a Long Island Iced Tea ($11.30), which he liked for its well-balanced mix, while I went for an Italian Pinot Grigio ($11.25). Both drinks were refreshing and paired well with our food, setting the tone for a relaxing evening. Food: We started with the calamari ($23), which was light and crispy with two great dipping sauces. For my main, I had the Ravioli alla Gavino ($24)—the ricotta and spinach filling was creamy and delicious, though I’d have liked a bit more seasoning. My cousin’s Fettuccini Carbonara ($25) was the highlight of the meal: perfectly cooked pasta in a rich, smoky sauce. Service: The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Our server was knowledgeable, and the meal was paced perfectly, allowing us to enjoy every bite without feeling rushed. Value for Money: At just over $100 for both of us, the prices felt fair for the quality of the food and the experience. The portions were generous, and the overall meal was satisfying.

The first time I had Weinstein & Gavino’s was in March 2021 when my roommate ordered it on UberEats for her birthday. Despite celebrating in the midst of the pandemic, the margarita pizza sang to my taste buds like Mia sang to Sebastian in the 2016 acclaimed ‘La La land’ (solid, not necessarily exceptional, but strong potential for replay-ability). I decided to give the restaurant an in-person try this week when my dad came to visit me. I ordered the carbonara and chose papardelle as my pasta shape of choice. Sorry but not sorry! Not my prob if you don’t think that’s the right call for carbonara- I’m just living my truth here. The dish itself was fine. Not that this is necessarily a problem, but it tasted slightly overwhelmingly like cream and butter. I was searching for some sort of pudginess or nuance in flavour but was left stranded a bit. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the bacon either- it was a bit overcooked. I had a bite of the pizza my dad ordered and it was like a pool floatie appeared in the distance. The saving grace of the night! Solid crust, great cheese stretch, and flavourful sauce. I would definitely lean towards ordering pizza here. Prices here were relatively fair especially for a restaurant downtown. Those seeking solid Italian in this city are likely not putting Rue Crescent on the top of their hit list. W&G makes a solid effort though. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful! Fun vibes (music a bitttt too loud) and a decent spot for a lively dinner with friends and family members you like!

Wienstein & Gavino’s restaurant is a spacious, vintage, and cozy place. The atmosphere is great and cozy. As it was the middle of the week, I did not expect seeing many people but the place was almost full. We had a book at 6:15 pm. The staff was welcoming and I was seated. The service was fast enough. They offer a baguette with olive and vinegar which is a combination I love. I suggest putting them in a bowl rather than a plate so nothing would be spilled. I asked for the waitress recommendation and she recommended the breaded veal over two other meals and I took her recommendation. My friend ordered pasta. My plate has spaghetti with pesto sauce and some pine seeds which are great together but the sauce was so oily and the spaghetti was tasteless (needs some salt, pepper, & some spices to enrich the flavours. The breaded veal was marinated with tomato sauce but I could not taste the veal well as it was tasteless for me too. I asked the waitress what kind of alcoholic drinks she recommends as I feel nasal congestion and she laughed and mocked me saying “I am not a doctor”. I was like yeah I know but I am asking if you know any drink that has ginger, lemon, hot spices, etc. Then, she recommended hot whiskey with honey and I took it and it was good. I heard a lot about the place and I was longing to try it but my first experience was not wow as I expected and the food did not meet my expectations (minus two stars for the food and the way the waitress took my question as it was embarrassing for me). However, it is a nice place to chill and enjoy your time eating and drinking.

Writing my review now from our visit on Feb. 19. We had reservations at 8pm. Bread with olive oil/vinaigrette was served to the table not long after sitting down. Our appetizers arrived at 8:35pm. The soup, caesar salad and calamari were good. The evening went downhill from this moment on. The restaurant was very noisy-busy with many tables celebrating some sort of party. As we waited for our entrées, three people sat down to the table next to us. They were served their meals, they ate their meals and paid for their meals while we sat waiting for ours. Our waitress only came by our table once to tell us that our food was coming. Husband said we waited long enough and should leave but I was stubborn and wanted to make sure our family had dinner. Seeing how angry I was, he went to complain to the waitress. Lo and behold, our food arrived at 9:41pm. Pizza was bad. It was like eating bread. Was it made out of Bisquick (a product we had to bake with in middle school home-ec class during the 1980s)? The waitress knew they screwed up and blamed the kitchen for being short staffed. She offered a free slice of pie to make up for the hassle. Not four slices for our family of four but one slice of lemon pie. How generous. Seeing that the restaurant is full and you can't manage everyone on a timely basis, maybe consider closing parts of the restaurant until you can hire enough staff to properly serve the patrons.

Well well well use to love this restaurant, but now I will stay away honestly. I used to come to eat the gamberi macchiato and the chicken&fries (forgot the name of the dishe). The taste and the portion was always great, but since last winter the portion and the service got way to disgraceful for the price we pay for. When it happened the first time I let it slide but it did happened a second time, now I found that meh I don’t know not wanna go I guess? I don’t wanna pay 25$+ that doesn’t even fill me.. I use to take my plate as takeout, now there’s not enough food on the plate lol We did ask the waitress that we were getting small portion of fries and pasta, and if it was normal. She had to make feel like shit by saying for this is a good portion for the price we are paying ( my boyfriend dish was on their special menu of the day). Which made us cringe because it felt like we were asking too much for a 20$ dish. Please keep in mind that the gamberi macchiato cost 28$, but she had to comment on the price of the 20$ dish. Honestly, I felt horrible and it happened 2 months ago but I didn’t want to sound like a bad person leaving a bad review but honestly guys don’t go to there if you want a nice atmosphere where you are not judge for just asking if it’s normal that portion size changed. Sorry didn’t take much picture of before as I was not in my review era.

TOURIST TRAP Service is good. Waiters and very kind, attentive, and sweet! However, the food is atrocious. You’re honestly better off buying a frozen meal and heating it up in a microwave. The appetizers we ordered: caprese, meatballs, and calamari were all good, though not as warm as we would’ve desired (plates were cold). It was the main courses that really nailed the coffin shut. For starters, all the items were room temperature. The lamb shank is bland apart from the sauce reduction. It was chewy, and not cooked to order. The lasagna should really be called a soup. It is not a traditional layered lasagna in which meat sauce is between the layers of pasta. Instead, here you’ll receive layered pasta with nothing in between, placed in a bowl of meat sauce, and topped with a floating layer of cheese. The veal was tasteless apart from the taste of what felt like a cup of lemon juice it had been cooked in. The breading it seemed to have was mushy and peeled off of the veal. The one who ordered it stated they would “avoid it at all costs.” This food is so horrible it is beyond words. At most, stick with the bread and oil. An incredible amount of room for improvement!
