The Carlos Gardel House Museum was inaugurated on March 4, 2003 in 735 Jean Jaurès street , address of the house in which the great artist lived with his mother since 1927 and until his farewell to Argentina, on 7 November 1933. The property had been acquired by the Zorzal Criollo from its previous owner, Don Ramón Gorina, on June 9, 1926, five days before the birthday of Doña Berta Gardès.
It is possible to know some of the buildings that existed previously on the premises thanks to the plans that are part of the museum archive . The one in 1904 shows a modest single-storey house, with no windows to the front, with a door that leads directly to a patio, which in turn leads to the simple rooms, the small kitchen and the bathroom.
The 1915 plan records a very different construction, also in terms of its use. It is a brothel that already has a second floor . But the nine narrow rooms, logically isolated from each other, are arranged in a row, with access from the patio. At the end of it, a bathroom, and up the stairs, a kitchen and other rooms that seem to be staff who served the premises. You can already see the two windows facing the street, which correspond to other rooms.
Finally we find the 1921 plan that belongs to the house built by Mr. Gorina . After passing the characteristic entrance hall , you enter a large distributor hall that leads to the main room , with the two large windows to the front, to a small room , possibly a desk, and to the patio , covered in its first section. The desk follows what will surely have been the dining room of the house. Then a room , a large interior bathroom and three more rooms , connected to each other and to the patio. The open patio overlooked the kitchen, with a small door and a window that looked towards the entrance. This one had a pantry next . Also on the patio there was a toilet . Then followed the staircase leading to a small room on the first break and then three more small rooms . The laundry room with its sink was on the large terrace . This was surely the plan of the house in which Gardel and his mother lived. Despite the desire to modify the house that in his letters manifests the Morocho del Abastomost likely he did not, taking into account the hectic schedule that Gardel had at that time in the country and abroad and the advice of his friend and administrator...
Read moreDisappointing. Although the museum is located in Gardel's old house, there is no trace of the house as it was then, there are just modern exhibition rooms. There are very few artifacts on display, the exhibition is mainly old photos, which are certainly interesting. However there are no (working) music audios and no (working) film videos, which is very surprising. All information displayed is in spanish only. Almost half the exhibition space is taken up by a separate exhibition on another tango musician who was unknown to us. At the exit we noticed some brief information cards in english, which for some reason the museum staff had not given to us. Nevertheless at an entrance price of only 2000 pesos, it is worth seeing just for...
